Arachnids abroad and while traveling: are they dangerous, where do you encounter them, where can you see them?
What is anarachnid?
- Arachnids are not insects; they are a type of arthropod that is different from insects because they have eight legs.
- The best-known groups of arachnids are spiders, mites, ticks, and scorpions. Read more about them on their specific pages.
How dangerous are arachnids abroad?
- Almost all spiders use venom to hunt their prey, but only a very tiny amount of spiders have venom strong enough and fangs long enough to cause harm to humans.
- Only a few species of scorpions have enough venom to hurt a human.
- Many mites are parasitic and can lead to annoying diseases for humans
- Ticks are known for being able to transfer serious diseases to their hosts.
What should you do if you encounter arachnids while traveling?
- Try to get an idea of which arachnids you might meet during your travels. A bit of knowledge can prevent a lot of unnecessary panic and discomfort.
- Most arachnids will keep a distance and only bite or sting when they're cornered. Don't put your hand somewhere you can't see it, and make sure there is nothing in your shoes or clothes before you put them on.
- Wear tick-protective clothing when visiting nature and forests, and check your whole body for ticks in the evening.
- Avoid intimate contact with carriers of scabies mites and avoid sharing clothing, towels and sheets with people whose scabies status you don't know.
Can you eat arachnids, and what are some tasty arachnids to try abroad?
- Milbenkäse, or mite cheese, is a German specialty cheese made by aging the cheese for three months in a box with cheese mites. The digestive juices of the mites cause the cheese to ferment, while the mites nibble on the crust of the cheese. Cheese mites are also used to enhance the flavor of the French cheese Mimolette.
- In several countries where tarantulas live, they are eaten as a fried or roasted snack.
- In some places in the US you can buy scorpions encased in lollipops as a novelty snack.
