  • Favorite locations: Kuwait City.
  • Features: good facilities, safe, good food and beautiful ancient and modern culture, strongly Muslim and relatively strict towards women, not LGBTQ+ friendly.

Living in Kuwait?

  • With two-thirds of expats in Kuwait, you can combine traditional and modern Middle Eastern life with an international environment.
  • Quality of life: the quality of life is Kuwait is quite good thanks to the strong economy, good education, comfortable housing, modern infrastructure. However, it is hot in the summer and there is a strong influence of Islamic values in the country, and even though women generally have more rights than in other countries in the region, they can experience significant restrictions in personal freedom. For the LGBTQ+ community, there is not a good quality of life as there is no social acceptance and homosexuality is even illegal.
  • Culture: even though Kuwait has embraced many Western influences, the country remains conservative Arab-Islamic with a strong influence of Islam on laws, norms and social customs. However, women do enjoy more rights (being allowed to drive a car, study, work) than in many surrounding countries. One of the most important cultural traditions is the diwāniyyah, a regular gathering of men to socialize. Furthermore, family ties and hospitality are important values in daily life.
  • Health care: good health care, but long waiting times at public health facilities. Private institutions are more expensive. So arrange your own (international) health insurance well.

Travel in Kuwait?

  • Kuwait is a country with a bizarre mix between Western liberalism, oil capitalism and conservative Islam. Consequently, Kuwait City has mosques and skyscrapers side by side. The country is struggling with its neighbors, especially Iran. Besides Kuwait City and ports with large oil tankers, Kuwait does not really have that much to offer the traveler.

Updates Kuwait

  • Kuwait has very strict laws against the consumption, sale, and preparation of alcohol. This applies to both locals and foreigners, and it is not possible to legally purchase alcohol or bring it into the country. On and off, the checks are more regular. It is punishable by (high) fines, (severe) imprisonment, deportation, and confiscation of your driver's license.
  • Follow the rules, not to get in trouble, do not use, possess, or sell alcohol or drugs. This also applies to soft drugs.

How does the health and healthcare system work in Kuwait?

What is the quality of health care in Kuwait?

  • Health care in Kuwait is of high quality with modern facilities and well-trained doctors. The country has both a comprehensive public healthcare system and a good private sector.
  • The public healthcare system is managed by the Ministry of Health (MOH).
  • Health care is free for locals; as an expat you must pay an annual fee. Also, certain treatments such as X-rays are not free.
  • There are many English-speaking doctors available.
  • Care is available 24/7 in emergencies.

How does the public healthcare system work in Kuwait?

  • Kuwait is divided into five regions and each region has a public hospital with a 24-hour emergency service. There are also many specialty hospitals.
  • There are also an increasing number of mental health facilities.
  • Queues and waiting times are long.
  • Public health care for expats is a sensitive issue; possibly health care for expats and locals will be split in the future. The government prefers expats to use private care. Sometimes locals are also given priority.

How does the private healthcare system work in Kuwait?

  • Private healthcare in Kuwait means better services and shorter waiting times. The private healthcare sector is one of the best in the world.

How is the pregnancy care arranged in Kuwait?

  • To have a baby you need a marriage certificate. Without that document you won't be admitted, you won't get a birth certificate for your child and you run the risk of deportation/imprisonment.
  • Most births take place in the hospital; there are very few home births.
  • Standards are high for both prenatal, birth and postnatal care.
  • In addition to hospitals, there are some specialized clinics that support more natural forms of birth.
  • There are a number of expat doulas and Lamaze specialists working in the country, some of whom run pre-natal classes and yoga sessions, but it is not common practice.
  • Breastfeeding is encouraged within the walls of the hospital or clinic, but outside of these, there are still few public locations where it is allowed.
  • Keep in mind that your partner is usually not welcome in the hospital once you are admitted there.
  • Abortion is strictly prohibited, with no exceptions.

Why Should You Take Out A Travel Insurance?

  • The chance of getting injured or ill is generally higher than when you would have stayed at home. The medical care you will need can be very expensive, even more so if you are treated in a private clinic.

  • If you have to fly back because of family circumstances, the flights might be more expensive than your original flight because you have to fly on short notice.

  • You might have to deal with the damage, loss or theft of your luggage.

  • In case of emergency it can be difficult to figure out what to do. A good travel insurance will have an assistance team on standby for you 24/7 and will be able to tell you what steps to take.

Why Should You Specifically Take Out A Travel Insurance For A Long Trip Abroad?

  • Often regular travel or health insurances only cover trips for a maximum number of days (for example 60, 90 or 180 days).

  • Depending on your home country, your health insurance might not offer any coverage for treatment abroad.

  • During a long trip you might consider specific activities, like paid work or volunteering. Regular travel insurances often don’t cover these kind of activities. The same goes for adventurous/ hazardous sports like skydiving, scuba-diving and bungee jumping.

More on why to use JoHo

  • JoHo offers support with problems that may arise with the insurer. Sometimes disagreement with claims, cancellation notice or insurance premiums can occur. In this situation it helps if you have the assistance of an organization who has an established relationship with the insurer.

You can pretty much go all over the world to work in the hospitality industry, hotels and hostels, in the healthcare sector or for example at a diving school.

What sports activities to do abroad?

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
