What to take to Uzbekistan: brief

To pack and check
  • Documents: a passport valid for at least another 6 months. For many nationalities, a visa-free stay or e-visa is possible for short tourist trips, but always check the current rules.
  • Money: Uzbek som (UZS), with euros or US dollars as a backup if needed. You can withdraw cash in cities such as Tashkent, Samarkand, and Bukhara. Cash is the norm.
  • Clothing: light, modest clothing for hot summers, supplemented with layers for cooler evenings in the desert and for spring and autumn. Modest clothing is useful for certain religious and tourist locations.
  • Personal Care: sunscreen and lip balm. The sun is intense, especially in the desert areas. Tissues or wet wipes may also come in handy for bathroom visits.
  • Shoes: comfortable walking shoes or sturdy sneakers, for the extensive walking in the old cities with lots of cobblestones and dust. Medicines and first-aid kit: ORS, painkillers, anti-diarrhea medication, and personal medication.
  • Outdoors and practical items: reusable water bottle and possibly a hat or cap for sun protection.
  • Technology and equipment: power bank; otherwise, the country uses the same plugs as the Netherlands and Belgium (types C and F).
  • Transport: an international driving license can be useful if you rent a car outside the cities.

  • A light scarf for sun and dust protection (and for visits to religious sites).
  • Offline maps; distances between cities can be large.
  • A little space in your luggage for carpets, ceramics, and textiles from bazaars.

  • After the Soviet era, healthcare in Uzbekistan has deteriorated. This has resulted in a shortage of hospital beds and staff, as well as medicines and vaccinations. Fortunately, the government is working on this, and is spending more on improving healthcare every year.

Travel in Uzbekistan?

  • Uzbekistan is a country that is rarely on bucket lists, but is definitely worth it! You can think of visiting famous Silk Road cities, strolling through oriental markets, and hiking over wild mountain ranges. You can even travel through it by train these days. Uzbekistan has retained beautiful architecture and enormous Islamic buildings from its rich history, which is interwoven with the Silk Road. Despite the drying up of the Aral Sea, the fairly conservative government and incidents with Muslim extremists, most people in Uzbekistan are very friendly.
  • One of the highlights is the city of Samarkand, close to the border with Tajikistan. This monumental city was founded in the 14th century BC in the fertile soil of Serafšān as an oasis city. It is one of the aforementioned cities on the Silk Road between the Middle East and China, and largely owes its prosperity to that. There are also several pearls of Islamic architecture here, such as the Shakh-i Zindeh Mosque and the Tilla Kori Madrasah. The city has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
  • The landscape in Uzbekistan consists mainly of desert areas and mountain ranges. The highest mountains are no less than 4,800 meters high and covered in snow.
  • This country is also home to rare animals such as the desert lynx and the snow leopard.
  • Furthermore, the country is known for its many teahouses where sweet tea and delicacies are served.

You can get involved in nature, in a project with animals or cleaning the sea or beaches. Those who want to learn more can choose for example a language course in Latin America, Spain or South Africa.

You can work on campsites in Europe or bush camps in Africa.     • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
