Packing list for Guinea-Bissau, travel insurance for Guinea-Bissau and taking your belongings
Packing for and taking to Guinea-Bissau
What to take to Guinea-Bissau: brief
To pack and check:
- Documents and money: a passport that is valid for at least 6 months and a visa. Make sure you know the visa procedure in advance. Bring your passport, visa, vaccination certificate, and travel insurance details both digitally and on paper. Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required on arrival. Guinea-Bissau uses the West African CFA franc (XOF), and carrying enough cash is important. ATMs are scarce, and cards are rarely used.
- Clothing: loose, lightweight clothing for the hot and humid climate. Covering your arms and legs also helps protect you against mosquitoes. During the rainy season, quick-drying clothing and a light rain jacket are useful.
- Shoes: comfortable sandals or sneakers for Bissau. For nature areas, walks and traveling outside the capital, shoes with good grip are useful.
- Toiletries and hygiene: high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm, hand sanitizer, tissues, and wet wipes. Bring enough personal toiletries and medication, as pharmacies are limited and may run out of supplies.
- Packing and protecting your belongings: a rain cover for your backpack and waterproof bags for your phone, passport, and electronics. During the rainy season, heavy showers can quickly make roads and paths more difficult to travel.
- Insects and animals: bring a strong insect repellent, preferably containing DEET or picaridin. Insect protection is not an optional extra here: there is a high risk of malaria, and dengue, Zika and yellow fever also occur.
- Sleeping: an impregnated mosquito net is a useful addition to your luggage, especially if you are staying in basic accommodation or traveling to the islands and other rural areas.
- Medication and travel first aid kit: bring ORS, plasters, blister plasters, painkillers, anti-diarrhea medication, hand sanitizer, a thermometer, and enough personal medication. Medical facilities are very limited and hospitals are not fully operational.
- Outdoor and useful items: sunglasses, a sun hat or cap, a reusable water bottle with a filter, and a small daypack.
- Technology and equipment: Guinea-Bissau uses Type C and F sockets, so you generally do not need a travel adapter if you are traveling from the Netherlands. A power bank and headlamp are very useful. Download maps, accommodation details, and translation information in advance, as internet and mobile coverage can be less reliable outside Bissau.
- Safety and theft: a money belt or other secure pouch is a useful item in Guinea-Bissau. Always carry identification with you, as the police may ask for it.
To consider:
- If you are heading towards the Bijagós Islands, lightweight water shoes or sandals are useful for boat trips and muddy shores. A dry bag is useful too.
- Binoculars for birds and other wildlife, especially on the Bijagós Islands.
- Some basic Portuguese.
- Offline maps and a translation app.
- Patience, especially when traveling during the rainy season.
Are there mosquitoes in Guinea-Bissau?
- Yes, there are many mosquitoes in the country. Guinea-Bissau has a high risk of malaria. There is also a risk of dengue, Zika and yellow fever. Malaria mosquitoes are mainly active between dusk and dawn, while dengue and other mosquitoes can also bite during the day.
- Insect repellent is therefore important both during the day and at night, as is covering your skin with long clothing.
- An impregnated mosquito net is particularly useful if you are not sleeping in a well-screened or air-conditioned room.

Are there sandflies in Guinea-Bissau?
- Yes, sandflies can occur in Guinea-Bissau, especially in rural and natural areas. For most travellers, however, mosquitoes are a much more important concern.
- Few cases of people infected with leishmaniasis are known in Guinea-Bissau. Sandflies are therefore probably mainly just an annoyance.
- Fortunately, as with mosquitoes, products containing DEET or picaridin, as well as long clothing, can help protect you.

Are DEET, or other insect repellents, available in Guinea-Bissau?
- Some insect repellents are available in Bissau, but you cannot rely on a large or consistent supply, especially when it comes to DEET and picaridin. Outside the capital, you are unlikely to find much beyond possibly some locally available products.
- For a trip to Guinea-Bissau, it is therefore important to bring enough insect repellent with you from your home country.

Is it legal to buy a joint or weed in Guinea-Bissau, or bring it with you to Guinea-Bissau?
- No, definitely not. Drug offenses can carry severe penalties, and local prisons are somewhere you really do not want to end up.
- Bringing cannabis, CBD products, or any other illegal drugs with you to Guinea-Bissau is a big risk and can have severe consequences. Something that may be okay at home can be a very different matter at the border.
