Beschrijvende statistiek vat de informatie uit een verzameling data samen in frequentiedistributies, diagrammen, puntgrafieken, boxplotten en kruistabellen. Deze weergaven hebben een gemiddelde, mediaan of modus. De hellingscoëfficiënt beschrijft hoe steil een grafiek stijgt of daalt en de standaarddeviatie beschrijft de spreiding.

Inferentiële statistiek maakt voorspellingen aan de hand van data. Er kunnen betrouwbaarheidsintervallen worden berekend voor proporties of gemiddelden, onder andere met behulp van de t-distributie. De nulhypothese is vaak dat twee variabelen onafhankelijk zijn, een significantietoets onderzoekt of er genoeg ondersteunend materiaal is voor de alternatieve hypothese. Een chi-kwadraattoets geeft aan hoe ver de verwachte en geobserveerde frequenties uit elkaar liggen. De sterkte van een verband is de correlatie, dit wordt onder andere gemeten met een betrouwbaarheidsinterval.
