Property law studies the legally recognized relationships between people, organizations, public authorities, and resources. Its central concern is not simply who possesses an object or a piece of land, but which rights, powers, duties, and restrictions are attached to it.
The discipline governs the acquisition, ownership, use, enjoyment, protection, financing, and transfer of property. It also provides methods for resolving situations in which several parties claim different interests in the same asset.
Property law creates a structured framework through which ownership and related interests can be identified and enforced. Although the terminology varies between legal systems, several recurring features shape the field.
The discipline contains several connected areas, each concerned with a different form of property or type of legal relationship.
