Legal philosophy studies the foundations of law. It asks what makes a rule legal, how legal authority can be justified, what judges do when rules are unclear, and whether law can be separated from morality. Rather than treating legal systems as fixed collections of rules, jurisprudence examines their underlying concepts, purposes, and assumptions.
The discipline is theoretical, but its questions arise from real legal institutions and social conflicts. It connects close conceptual reasoning with broader inquiry into politics, history, society, and moral judgment.
Different schools of thought emphasize different sources of legal validity, methods of interpretation, and relationships between law and social power.
