Preparation & Packing

Packing list for Mexico, travel insurance for Mexico, and taking your belongings

Packing list for Mexico, travel insurance for Mexico, and taking your belongings

What to take with you to Mexico: spotlighted

Featured items:

  • Documents: a passport that is valid for at least 6 months and a (digital) copy.
  • Money: Mexican pesos are useful for the first few days, but you can also use your debit card almost everywhere.
  • Care: coral-friendly sunscreen with a high factor is usually cheaper to take with you. And of course aftersun!
  • Outdoor and handy items: sunglasses and a cap or hat.
  • Clothing: Mexico is warm all year round, but it is cooler in higher areas. Airy and light clothing with a warmer layer is the go-to. Light rainwear is useful in the rainy season. Beachwear for beach days.
  • Shoes: good walking shoes for all the exploring and flip-flops for beach days.
  • Medicines and travel pharmacy: a small first aid kit with plasters, painkillers and ORS. Mosquito repellent.
  • Handy items: a shopping bag. Plastic bags are now banned in many places. Safety: a money belt, especially for unsafe places.
  • Technology and equipment: world plug with type A/B.

What are some other options for packing?

  • Reusable water bottle with filter, because tap water is technically drinkable, but often tastes strange.
  • Quick-drying towel and swimwear for the beach or pool. In terms of swimwear, people wear different things - from bikinis to burkinis.
  • Snorkeling set, because it's beautiful there!
  • Water shoes for convenience.
  • International driving license if you want to drive around yourself (preferably not in Mexico City).
  • A mosquito net can be nice if you're going to a malaria area, but is usually not necessary.

What should you know when you bring your stuff with you to Mexico?

  • What the weather is like during the period you're going.
  • How safe the areas you're going to are.
  • Whether you need any specific things for any adventure activities.

Are there mosquitoes in Mexico?

  • Mosquitoes are present all year round in Mexico, so it is advisable to always protect yourself. Although it will be quite bearable in the winter.
  • During the wet season (April-November) there are more mosquitoes, especially in the southern regions of Chiapas, Tabasco and Yucatan.
  • Because mosquitoes can transmit diseases such as dengue and malaria, it is good to protect yourself.

Are there sandflies in Mexico?

  • Sand flies are present in several places, and getting Leishmaniasis is no fun! Sand flies are most active during sunrise and sunset, but fortunately mosquito repellent can also help you with this.
  • The Yucatan Peninsula (Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo) is a real hotspot for sand flies.
  • Be especially careful in the southern areas of Oaxaca, eastern Veracruz, Chiapas and eastern Tabasco.

Can you buy DEET, or other mosquito repellents, in Mexico?

  • You can buy all sorts of mosquito repellents in Mexico, both natural and chemical. Picaridin is harder to find.
  • Mosquito repellents are available at supermarkets and pharmacies. The cheapest repellents can be found at small, local supermarkets, but they are often more expensive than at home.
  • “Auchan” (does not contain DEET) and “Off” are two popular brands.

Can you buy a joint or weed in Mexico, or take it with you to Mexico?

  • The rules regarding joints are even grayer than the cloud of smoke above Ajaplan and are evolving. Legalization is ‘on its way’, but has not yet fully arrived. There are no legal shops, no safe places to buy, and no clear user guidelines. The rules are also different for locals than for tourists and can change.
  • In general, you are allowed to have 5 grams on you (if you are 18+). This is not legal, but is tolerated. You may just come across the wrong officer, who does not agree with this, especially as a tourist.
  • For taking cannabis with you the rules are clear, it is not allowed.

Health, Insurance & Safety

How dangerous is your destination in Central America for travel, work or living abroad?

How dangerous is your destination in Central America for travel, work or living abroad?

Per country: how safe is your destination for travel?

How dangerous is Mexico for your safety, health and insurances?

How dangerous is Mexico for your safety, health and insurances?

How to stay safe and out of trouble in Mexico?

  • Mexico is not a very safe country, but as long as you avoid certain areas and pay close attention it is fine. Furthermore, on public roads you may encounter checkpoints by the military and police, pay attention and follow the directions during the search.
  • Travelers are advised to exercise vigilance in the state of Guerrero and avoid demonstrations and gatherings.

What to look out for regarding crime in Mexico?

  • The number of robberies on public transport and at bus stations in Mexico City is significant.
  • Armed robberies also take place on cars at traffic lights at some points in Mexico City. Should this happen to you, do not resist, and immediately surrender your belongings.
  • Robberies are particularly common in the states of Guerrero, Oaxaca and Chiapas. There is still some tension in the state of Chiapas; armed groups have established "autonomous areas" there. These are not recognizable as such, but you are at greater risk there, as neither police nor insurance companies of car rental companies enter these areas without question. If you visit the highlands of Chiapas, it is advisable to be extra careful.

What to look out for regarding drugs in Mexico?

  • There is unrest in Mexico between rival drug cartels and the police and military, especially in the Tierra Caliente region of Michoacán. There is also growing unrest in Cancun and surrounding areas. This is accompanied by increasing violence, which can also affect civilians and tourists. Many deaths have already occurred in this drug war, most of which are not directed against the general public.
  • People are advised not to travel after sunset, especially in the northern states, and to be very careful when going out after sunset in the big cities.
  • It has occurred that at the airports in Mexico City, and especially Cancun, luggage tags were removed from suitcases of travelers to Europe, including the Netherlands. These labels were then placed on other suitcases in which drugs were hidden. It is recommended that you label your luggage inside and out with your name and address, and if you notice that a luggage tag is missing when you return to Europe, report it immediately to airport police. In addition, after you check in your luggage at the airport in Mexico, consider taking a photo that clearly shows the attached luggage tags. Should you become a victim of this baggage label mix-up in Mexico itself, upon departure, alert the Dutch embassy immediately.

What to look out for regarding natural disasters in Mexico?

  • Tropical storms and hurricanes can occur in Mexico between May and October. Inland, these disturbances often cause heavy rainfall, which - especially in mountainous areas - can cause landslides, making roads impassable. Mexico is located in an earthquake-prone area. Severe earthquakes can occur. For information regarding earthquakes locally, it is recommended to follow media coverage. The Popotcatepetl volcano (near Mexico City) is active and closed to the public. Risk areas have been established around this volcano.
How dangerous is El Salvador for your safety, health and insurances?

How dangerous is El Salvador for your safety, health and insurances?

How to stay safe and out of trouble in El Salvador?

  • El Salvador is not exactly a safe country. The government is taking ongoing measures to reduce the number of violent and gang-related crimes, but violent robberies are still relatively common.
  • Also watch out for blockades and demonstrations; stay away from these as much as possible and stay calm.
  • Traveling alone by women is not recommended, due to sexual violence.
  • In any case, it is not recommended for anyone to travel alone in El Salvador, or at night after dark.
  • In rural areas of El Salvador, landmines and unexploded remnants of war are still common. Especially in the districts of Chalatenango and Morazan. Use only paved roads and well-traveled trails.
  • Renting a car in El Salvador is mainly for the more experienced driver. Only drive yourself if you can hold your own in the hustle and bustle of larger cities.

What to look out for regarding crime in El Salvador?

  • Crime in El Salvador ranges from relatively innocuous (such as pickpockets), to violent robberies and sometimes even rape and murder.
  • Among travelers in El Salvador and Central America, stories about safety often travel like wildfire. Listen carefully to these, but don't let them drive you crazy either!
  • Watch your belongings carefully when visiting crowded places, such as markets or bus stations. Also when you're on the bus, especially when you don't have to get off at a stop by yourself. Armed robberies occur in El Salvador, and violence is often not shunned. Should this happen to you, hand over everything and definitely do not resist!
  • Plan to arrive during the day, or travel from the airport to San Salvador (or elsewhere).
  • If traveling by private transportation (not recommended), keep your car doors and windows locked.
  • Penalties for drug offenses are very stiff in El Salvador: long prison sentences in local jails.

What to look out for regarding natural disasters in El Salvador?

  • Hurricane season is from June to November. Hurricanes can cause disruption of (public) services. Always find out where your nearest shelter is.
  • Landslides, mudslides and flooding can occur as a result of hurricanes. Don't take it lightly: the direction and strength of hurricanes can change suddenly.
  • El Salvador has active volcanoes. If you want to go climbing or hike, always check with local authorities about which areas are safe.
  • Earthquakes also occasionally occur in El Salvador.

How dangerous is Belize for your safety, health and insurances?

  • Drugs are prohibited in Belize, so don't use it.
  • In Belize you will soon be close to nature, be aware of the possible presence of scorpions and poisonous snakes (Fer-de-Lance) in the jungle and, for example, the poisonous jellyfish “Portuguese warship” and the bull shark in the waters off Belize.

How does healthcare work in Central America, and what travel insurance, health insurance or expat insurance do you need?

How does healthcare work in Central America, and what travel insurance, health insurance or expat insurance do you need?

What is the quality of healthcare in Central America?

  • The quality of healthcare in Central America varies greatly by country and region. Larger cities generally have better facilities than rural areas.
  • All countries have both public and private healthcare providers, with private healthcare providers generally being better and offering more options.
  • For more serious medical conditions, it is best to seek care in Costa Rica, Mexico and Panama. There are more options and better facilities here.
  • Pharmacies, “farmacias”, are generally easily accessible, especially in urban areas. Many people visit a pharmacy for primary care.
  • Many medicines that are only available with a prescription in other countries can be purchased over the counter here.

How does the public healthcare system work in Central America?

  • Most Central American countries have a public healthcare system that is accessible to residents (sometimes also expats with a residence permit). This system is usually financed through taxes or social contributions.
  • Public healthcare in Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Honduras is sometimes or regularly substandard. The waiting times are long, the facilities are very limited and you will hardly find any privacy or comfort.
  • In Costa Rica, Panama and Mexico, public healthcare is reasonable to good.

How does the private healthcare system work in Central America?

  • Reasons to choose private healthcare in Central America are the shorter waiting times and better facilities.
  • Private healthcare is a lot more expensive than public healthcare, but the costs are still lower than in North America or Europe, for example.
  • You often have to pay in advance.

How is the family doctor or general practitioner arranged in Central America?

  • A formal GP system usually does not exist. In many countries you can visit a specialist directly without a referral.
  • In Costa Rica and Panama, you often first have contact with a general practitioner in the public system.
  • Many expats go to private clinics with "general practitioners" or make direct use of specialists.

How is the dental care and dentist arranged in Central America?

  • Dental care is generally good and much cheaper than in Western Europe or the US, especially in countries such as Costa Rica, Guatemala and Nicaragua, but also in Belize.
  • Most dental practices are located in urban areas.

How is pregnancy and maternity care arranged in Central America?

  • The quality of maternity care also varies between countries. In Costa Rica and Panama, maternity care is well organized in both the public and private sectors. In Guatemala and Honduras, pregnancy can be riskier because care lags behind other countries.
  • In the more developed countries, deliveries generally take place in hospitals.
  • Expats usually opt for maternity care through private institutions.

How safe or unsafe is a trip or stay in Central America?

What should you pay attention to in terms of safety in Central America?

  • Safety is an important point of attention in Central America. Some countries have higher crime rates, especially in certain urban or remote areas.
  • Countries such as Costa Rica and Panama are relatively safe, while El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala are known for violence and theft, especially in certain neighborhoods.
  • Especially in tourist areas pickpocketing, burglaries and scams occur.
  • It is not recommended to travel alone at night and in remote areas.

What should you look out for in terms of diseases in Central America?

  • Tropical diseases are common, such as dengue, chikungunya, zika and in some regions malaria.
  • Drinking water is safe in Panama and parts of Costa Rica, but bottled water is recommended in other countries.
  • The sun is intense – sunburn, dehydration and heat-related complaints are common.

What should you pay attention to when it comes to traffic in Central America?

  • Traffic is often chaotic and unpredictable, especially in cities.
  • Road quality varies widely: highways can be good, but rural roads are potholed or unpaved.
  • Traffic rules are often ignored, which can lead to dangers on the road.
  • Buses are cheap but often overcrowded and irregular. In Panama and Costa Rica, public transport is better organised.
  • Many expats opt for their own car or taxis/Uber in the city (where available).

What are the best insurance options for backpacking, traveling, doing an internship, studying, volunteering, or working in Central America?

What types of insurance should you get if you're planning to emigrate, work as an expat, or live in Central America?

What is insurance for studying abroad, and why should you take out specialized travel insurance for your education abroad?

What is insurance for studying abroad?

  • Insurance for studying abroad means that you take out insurance that continues to provide coverage during your studies, your education, and your related activities abroad.
  • Insurance for studying abroad is also referred to as study insurance. This study insurance is specifically for when you go abroad for a long period of time to take courses, study, or conduct research abroad.

Why should you take out specialized travel insurance for a study abroad?

  • Study insurance is specifically designed for studying abroad, whereas regular travel insurance policies may offer coverage on paper but handle this situation differently in practice.
  • Study insurance offers coverage for longer stays than regular (vacation) travel insurance.
  • Study insurance is also suitable for many types of activities, ranging from various sports to hiking at high altitudes.
  • Study insurance continues to provide coverage if you start working during your trip, whether planned or unplanned. If you have not taken out insurance before departure that allows you to work, there is no guarantee that you will be able to take out insurance abroad that provides coverage.
  • Study insurance continues to provide coverage if your own country's health insurance no longer provides coverage.
  • Student insurance also covers your healthcare costs above the rates in your own country; with regular insurance, you have to pay the extra costs yourself.
  • Student insurance can also continue to provide coverage if (study) visa issuers impose additional requirements on how you insure yourself, for example if you are going to the US and applying for a J-1 visa.
  • Student insurance continues to provide coverage if you are staying abroad for a longer period of time and want to visit your own country in between.

What is important to insure when you are going to study abroad?

  • That you have insurance that is valid in the country or countries where you are going to travel and work.
  • That you are adequately insured for the sports and activities you are going to participate in during your period abroad
  • That you are insured for emergency assistance and early return if something happens to you or your immediate family.
  • That your medical expenses are insured up to the actual cost and not just for the standard costs. The costs per medical treatment vary greatly between countries.
  • That you insure your luggage and take sufficient precautions against theft or damage.
  • That you are well insured against personal liability.
  • That you are well insured in case of accidents.
  • That you only insure yourself for legal assistance if there is an immediate reason to do so, unless coverage is already automatically included in the insurance.
  • That you pay close attention to choosing the right coverage when performing work alongside your studies.

Why should you take out specialized travel insurance for an internship abroad?

What is insurance for an internship abroad?

  • Insuring an internship abroad means taking out insurance that continues to provide coverage during your internship abroad
  • Insurance for internships abroad are also referred to as internship insurance. This internship insurance is specifically for when you go abroad for a long period of time to work as an intern, take courses, or conduct research abroad.

Why should you take out specialized travel insurance for an internship abroad?

  • There may be several reasons why you need separate insurance for an internship abroad.
  • During internship activities abroad, additional requirements may apply as soon as you start performing work that involves additional risks. Only specific insurance policies offer coverage during these activities.
  • During your internship, the risk of accidents is sometimes greater, for example because you are doing work with which you have little experience or because of the nature of the work.
  • During your internship, local employers generally do not offer insurance, or offer limited insurance that does not provide sufficient coverage.
  • During an internship abroad where you receive financial compensation (or, for example, food or accommodation), your home country's health insurance coverage will potentially lapse. You will then need special insurance to remain insured for illness and accidents.
  • Regular travel insurance policies generally provide coverage for trips of a limited number of days. If your trip or stay abroad exceeds the maximum number of days, this generally means that for the entire travel period, you will not be covered.
  • Regular travel insurance policies generally only provide coverage for recreational trips without work activities.

What is important to insure when you are going to be an intern abroad?

  • That you have insurance that is valid in the area where you will be traveling and doing your internship.
  • That you are adequately insured for the sports and activities you will be participating in.
  • That you are insured for emergency assistance and early return in case something happens to you or your immediate family.
  • That your medical expenses are insured up to the actual cost (what it actually costs), and not just for the standard costs. The costs per medical treatment vary greatly between countries.
  • That you insure your luggage and take sufficient precautions against theft or damage.
  • That you are well insured against personal liability and, preferably, also for liability during your internship.
  • That you are well insured in case of accidents.
  • That you insure yourself for legal assistance if there is an immediate reason to do so, unless the coverage is already automatically included in the insurance.
  • Make sure you choose the right coverage for internship work in healthcare, with wild animals, or with dangerous machinery!

      The World

      The World

Where to go in the world?

      Backpacking around the world?

      • There is so much to see that instead of a page we could fill an entire website about this... Oh but wait, we did! See above all the countries of the world and their unique features :). What else we can say here: the world is your playground! Each continent has something special to offer, and here is a very short list of some of the best places:
      • South America: Patagonia for epic hikes, Colombia for fun locals and culture and Ecuador for unique culture.
      • Asia: Thailand as backpacker Mecca (or make it a tour of Southeast Asia right away), Japan for a combo of modern and traditional and many conveniences, Nepal for the real hikers and spiritualists among us.
      • Africa: Namibia for vast deserts, Tanzania for safaris and Kilimanjaro and Madagascar for if you really want to see totally unique nature and encounter few others.
      • Europe: Portugal for charming and affordable vacations, Paris, Berlin, London and Prague for fun city trips, Scotland for rugged nature and Outlander lovers and Albania for Eastern European authenticity with modern conveniences.
      • Oceania: New Zealand for pristine landscapes, Fiji for a true paradise and Australia for mega-long road trips.
      • North America: for conveniences and pricey trips, but fun and modern with beautiful nature.
      • Antarctica: if you have the opportunity and money, let us know in the comments how it was!
      • Activity spotting: too many to mention. Otherwise, start with the 7 wonders of the world, or the highest mountain on each continent, or go on a fun city break.

      Study around the world?

      • Best places: UK, US, Singapore (but also expensive), Germany, Finland, Netherlands, Australia.
      • Better not to: Nauru because there is no university there, North Korea, Afghanistan, Somalia, conflict zones but also many other countries that are still developing unless you like to learn about local customs and nature.

      Internship in the world?

      • There is so much out there! Think Switzerland for luxury corporate internships, Costa Rica for ecotourism and nature conservation, India for innovative and cultural challenges, etc etc etc.
      • Competencies: international cooperation, flexibility, adaptability, language skills.

      Volunteer around the world?

      • You make the most difference in poorer countries where they could use your help. Consider volunteering in the areas of education, community development, health care, child care, women's empowerment, helping start businesses, nature and animal protection etc.

      Working around the world?

      • In each country, it is totally different. If you want to go for a high salary, look at Switzerland and Singapore. Canada is otherwise pretty migrant friendly and as a European you can of course work anywhere in Europe.

Working as a digital nomad around the world?

      • As a digital nomad, you have a choice of the ultimate digital nomad places like Bali, Chiang Mai, Medellín and Lisbon, or quieter places like Puebla, Vilnius, Gran Canaria, Dakar.
      • Places not to recommend: North Korea, Antarctica, Baghdad, Pacific islands and conflict zones, of course.

      Living in the world?

      • Here you can go for adventure combined with challenges, uncertainty and risk, or safer places that may be more like home and have similar amenities.
      • The world is full of diversity, from the samba of Brazil to the tea ceremonies of Japan. The best places depend on your preferences for adventure, tranquility or tradition.
      • But ... no matter where you live, go and explore, always make sure you take care and have your own well-covered health insurance.
