What to take with you to Hong Kong: spotlighted

Featured items:
  • Documents: passport with 6 months validity and an online and/or offline copy.
  • Money: credit card is a widely used means of payment, as is debit card, but a few Hong Kong dollars (HKD) certainly won't hurt.
  • Care: high factor sunscreen, especially for the summer months (read more about sunscreens and sun block).
  • Outdoor and practical: raincoat or umbrella for unpredictable showers (especially in spring and summer), sunglasses.
  • Clothing: airy cotton/linen (and possibly quick-drying) clothing, because the heat and humidity are unavoidable outside of winter. Or well, also take something for the air conditioning! It can also rain heavily (especially from July to September), so rain gear is not an unnecessary luxury. In winter, a nice sweater and thin jacket are sensible for the sometimes very cold days.
  • Shoes: comfortable shoes to walk around the city in all day. Sandals/slippers if you want to let your feet breathe. Medicines and travel kit: a small first aid kit, possibly things you need to protect yourself against air pollution (for example, if you have asthma). Hand sanitizer and insect repellent. (see also DEET mosquito repellent).
  • Technology and equipment: world plug type G (see also world plug or travel plug).
What are some other options for packing as well?
  • Reusable water bottle.
  • Quick-drying travel towel
  • Face masks for your own health and to protect others if you are sick.

What should you keep in mind when traveling to Hong Kong with your belongings?

  • The season and what the weather might be like.
  • The culture and culturally appropriate way to dress in temples.

Are there mosquitoes in Hong Kong?

  • There are mosquitoes in the summer, but they are generally not a big problem.
  • There have been incidental cases of dengue and Japanese encephalitis, but they are rare.
  • Mosquitoes are therefore annoying, but you do not run much risk.

Are there sandflies in Hong Kong?

  • There are sand flies, but they are not a big problem either.
  • They are mainly found between April and September and along the sandy riverbanks, but they are not much of a problem. You are much more bothered by the “biting midges”, but they are not dangerous in terms of diseases either.

Can you buy DEET, or other mosquito repellents, in Hong Kong?

  • Mosquito repellents, including those containing DEET, are readily available in Hong Kong.
  • You can find them at supermarkets, convenience stores and pharmacies.
  • But in general you will not need them much, especially if you are staying in the city.

Can you buy a joint or weed in Hong Kong, or take it with you to Hong Kong?

  • Hong Kong is stricter than strict.
  • Everything that has to do with the use, use, purchase, sale or import of cannabis is more than illegal.
  • Even CBD is now prohibited, so better to take that CBD oil out of your luggage before you board the flight!
