Chapter 5:

Interpersonal therapies

Interpersonal: what happens between (inter) two persons

Historical roots:

  • Sullivan: political role (early supporter gay/ lesbian rights).
  • Importance relationships outside the family
  • Emotional difficulties reflected limitations person’s ability interact effectively with others
  • Consensual validation: develop understanding events talking to others were involved event --> arrive shared vision of events

Interpersonal psychotherapy:

  • Sullivan’s view: address ways in which psychiatric condition affects their relationships with others, to better cope with the condition --> eliminates responsibility
  • Phases interpersonal psychotherapy:
  1. Collect information --> enable therapist construct interpersonal formulation of client’s problem
  • Interpersonal inventory: detailed interview where current/ past significant interpersonal relationships systematically discussed
  • Core interpersonal domains:
  • Grief/ complicated bereavement: difficulties following death close one
  • Role dispute: unsatisfying/ conflictual relationship with different expectations from both parties
  •  Role transition: difficulty cope changes in life
  • Interpersonal deficits: history of difficult relationships
  1. Sustained exploration of one of the issues
  2. Ending/ termination: aim to consolidate learning/ change (consider what to do if difficulties re-emerge future)

Functional analytic psychotherapy:

  • Functional analytic psychotherapy (FAP): behaviourally orientated form of interpersonal therapy, client exhibits behaviour in relationship therapist --> awareness interpersonally client/ therapist --> constructive relating that can be generalised real-life relationships
  • Clinically relevant behaviours (CRBs): significant in-sesssion cline interpersonal responses
  • Bridging worksheets: client reflect pervious session, identify agenda following session, observe own behaviour in the intervening period.
  • Therapeutic love: increases likelihood client exhibits CRBs
  • ACL model of behaviour:
  • Awareness: behaviours centred observing needs/ values both participants
  • Courage: Able experience emotion presence of other
  • Love: responsive to needs/ emotions other, accept their vulnerability
