Workgroup 7: Clinical Childneuropsychology

Executive functioning is the ability to act as efficiently as possible in daily activities. Examples of executive functioning in children are waiting for their turn to speak, dealing with changes and making efficient plans. Damage to the prefrontal cortex, or areas connected to the prefrontal cortex, can lead to disorders/deficits in executive functioning.

Disruption in executive functioning in children is visible in their behaviour and the way they act. Children with disruptions in executive functioning can get angry very easily, show reckless behaviour, do not think clearly and they need structure. Their behaviour must be compared to ‘normal behaviour’ (what is normal?).

Case study

A case study is studied in which a child has trouble with things like both short term memory and working memory, planning/organising and cognitive flexibility. This is seen in his level of motivation, processing (visual) information and procrastination. He also has a relatively limited level of general knowledge. Because he has trouble with planning and organising he has trouble initiating and he is not able to finish his tasks. He could be helped by repeating things and messages, guidance with schoolwork, giving structure in daily activities and plan specific routines for him every day.
