Mosquitoes abroad and while traveling: are they dangerous, where do you encounter them, where can you see them?
What are mosquitoes and where do you encounter them?
- The term mosquito usually refers to the human-biting, sleep-disrupting family of small flies.
- The most notorious biting mosquito species are malaria mosquitoes, tiger mosquitoes, and yellow fever mosquitoes (or dengue mosquitoes).
- In addition to thousands of species of biting mosquitoes, there are also a few mosquito species that look more like flies than mosquitoes, but whose females also like to consume human blood: gnats, biting midges, and black flies.
- In certain water-rich areas, for example in New Zealand, you can be greatly bothered by the tiny biting black flies, an irritating collection of biting/stinging insects, Black flies also occur in Central America and Africa. Another family of annoyingly often biting flies consists of the 'gnats' (also known as midges, gnats, biting midges, no-see-ums, or gnats). This group of biting flies is very small, but often compensates for this through numbers and persistence.
- Mosquitoes only need a little water or moist soil to lay eggs and are therefore found almost everywhere in the world.
Are mosquitoes dangerous?
- Due to how widespread they are and the dangerous diseases they spread, mosquitoes rank top of the list of most dangerous animals.
- Mosquitoes can transmit a number of infectious diseases.
- The most common infectious diseases are:
- Malaria: which occurs in almost all (sub)tropical destinations.
- Yellow fever: You can contract this in large parts of tropical Africa and South America.
- Dengue fever: occurs in many countries in Latin America and Southeast Asia.
- Chikungunya virus: You can contract this in tropical areas, but also in France or Italy.
- River blindness is a nasty disease that is spread particularly in Africa via the bite of a type of blackfly.
Which mosquito species spreads which disease, and what are the symptoms?
- Which mosquitoes can cause chikungunya? Particularly the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes mosquito albopictus) and the dengue mosquito (Aedes mosquito aegypti, also known as the yellow fever mosquito)
- Where are the mosquitoes that can cause chikungunya found? Essentially on all continents, but limited in Europe
- What are the symptoms of Chikungunya? Symptoms include mild fever, and prolonged, severe joint pain
- Which mosquito can cause dengue fever? Particularly the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes mosquito albopictus) and especially the dengue mosquito (Aedes mosquito aegypti, also known as the yellow fever mosquito)
- Where are the mosquitoes that can cause dengue found? In the tropics and subtropics, and advancing within Europe and other less warm areas
- What are the symptoms of dengue or breakbone fever? Symptoms include sudden fever (up to 41 °C), with severe headache, pain in joints and muscles, and sometimes a rash
Filariasis:
- Which mosquitoes can cause Filariasis? Several types of mosquito, such as the malaria mosquito (Anopheles mosquito), the culex mosquito (Culex quinquefasciatus), and the dengue mosquito can transmit the disease-causing parasite
- Where are the mosquitoes found that can cause Filariasis? Tropical parts of Asia and South America, Africa, and the Caribbean
- What are the symptoms of Lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis)? Symptoms include impaired drainage of fluid from tissue. This can cause swelling and thickening of the skin
- Which mosquito can cause yellow fever? Specifically the dengue or yellow fever mosquito
- Where are the mosquitoes that can cause yellow fever found? In Sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America
- What are the symptoms of yellow fever? Symptoms include high fever, muscle pain, general malaise, headache, nausea
- Which mosquito can cause Japanese encephalitis? Specifically a specific culex mosquito (Culex tritaeniorhynchus)
- Where are the mosquitoes that can cause Japanese encephalitis found? Mainly in East and Southeast Asia and parts of the western Pacific
- What are the symptoms of Japanese encephalitis? Symptoms include a stiff neck, cachexia, paralysis
La crosse encephalitis:
- Which mosquito can cause La crosse encephalitis? The asian tiger mosquito (Aedes triseriatus mosquito)
- Where are the mosquitoes that can cause La crosse encephalitis found? Especially in the forests in the eastern United States.
- What are the symptoms of La crosse encephalitis? Symptoms include brain inflammation
- Which mosquito can cause malaria? The malaria mosquito (Anopheles mosquito)
- Where are the mosquitoes that cause malaria found? Mainly in tropical and subtropical areas
- What are the symptoms of malaria? The symptoms include severe fever attacks; certain forms of malaria can be fatal
Oropouche fever:
- Which mosquito can cause oropouche fever? mainly the southern house mosquito (Culex quinquefasciatus), but also biting midges and gnats
- Where are the mosquitoes that cause Oropouche fever found? Mainly in Brazil
- What are the symptoms of Oropouche fever? The symptoms include sudden fever, severe headache, chills
Rift Valley fever:
- Which mosquito can cause Rift Valley fever? The tiger mosquito, the dengue mosquito, and the culex mosquito, and more
- Where are the mosquitoes that cause Rift Valley fever found? In Africa and the Middle East
- What are the symptoms of Rift Valley fever? The symptoms include fever, headache and joint pain, liver disorders
Ross River virus:
- From which mosquito can you contract Ross River virus? Specifically the common banded mosquito (Culex Annulirostris)
- Where are the mosquitoes from which you can contract Ross River virus located? Specifically in Australia, Papua New Guinea, and islands in the South Pacific
- What are the symptoms of Ross River? The symptoms include fever, joint pain, fatigue
Venezuelan equine encephalitis:
- From which mosquito can you contract Venezuelan equine encephalitis? Specifically the culex mosquito and the malaria mosquito
- Where are the mosquitoes from which you can contract Venezuelan equine encephalitis located? In Central and South America
- What are the symptoms of Venezuelan equine encephalitis? The symptoms include fever, headache, encephalitis
- From which mosquito can you contract West Nile virus? Specifically the common house mosquito (Culex pipiens).
- Where are the mosquitoes from which you can contract West Nile virus located? In Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and North America

- Where are the mosquitoes from which you can contract the Zika virus located? In South and Central America, Africa, and Asia
- What are the symptoms of Zika fever? The symptoms include fever, inflammation of the mucous membrane of the eye, temporary joint complaints, and skin rash
What does a mosquito bite consist of?
- A mosquito bite forms after a mosquito has sucked a little blood from your body. The saliva left behind by the mosquito contains a protein that triggers an immune response in humans in the form of a mosquito bite.
- Technically speaking, a mosquito bites and does not sting. Stinging is a defensive reaction by insects in which they sting in self-defense and often inject venom.
- A mosquito bite serves as food for the mosquito.
How do you take precautions against diseases spread by mosquitoes?
- Good protection against mosquito bites is very important at all times. For example, as if they were coordinated, the "Dengue mosquito" is active during the day, while the "Malaria mosquito" is active mainly in the evening.
- Keep in mind that taking malaria tablets does not offer complete protection, and that there is currently no vaccine or cure for Chikungunya or West Nile fever.
