Stress and distress

What is stress, why would you study it, and where is the best place to study, intern or work abroad?

What is stress, why would you study it, and where is the best place to study, intern or work abroad?

What is stress?

  • Stress is a natural human response to demands and pressures that disturb a person's physical or psychological equilibrium.
  • The response prepares the body and mind to adapt when a situation is experienced as challenging, threatening, or potentially dangerous.
  • Stress can be understood through interacting physiological, psychological, and behavioral responses that influence how people react to demanding situations.

What are the main reasons for being active in the field of stress?

  • Studying stress provides insight into how physical and psychological responses interact when people encounter pressure, uncertainty, threats, or demanding situations.
  • The field examines the distinction between short-term stress that supports adaptation and chronic stress that may negatively affect physical and mental health.
  • Stress research provides a framework for understanding coping strategies, emotional regulation, resilience, and the different ways individuals respond to similar demands.
  • Knowledge about stress can inform workplace approaches aimed at reducing excessive pressure and supporting healthier ways of coping with demanding situations.
  • The study of stress connects psychological processes with health, behavior, social support, and environmental demands, making it relevant across different personal and organizational settings.

What skills do you need to participate in stress?

  • To analyse: understanding stress involves distinguishing physiological, psychological, and behavioral responses and examining how they interact under different circumstances.
  • To be aware of your surroundings: stress is strongly connected to demands, pressures, threats, social situations, and other contextual influences.
  • To be empathic: individual differences mean that people may experience and cope with similar stressful situations in very different ways.
  • To be stress resistant: the field directly examines coping, emotional regulation, resilience, and maintaining effective functioning when demands increase.
  • To communicate: discussing pressure, coping strategies, social support, and workplace stress requires clear communication about experiences and possible responses.
  • To plan: time management and structured preparation are among the approaches that can contribute to managing demanding or stressful situations.

What motivates people to study or work in stress?

  • Be and feel emotionally stable: stress research examines emotional regulation and coping processes that influence how people respond when demands become difficult to manage.
  • Be and feel self-aware: recognizing physiological, psychological, and behavioral responses can contribute to understanding how stress develops and how people respond to it.
  • Be and feel connected: social support is one of the factors associated with differences in people's ability to cope with stressful circumstances.
  • Be and feel involved: stress can be studied in practical settings where individual well-being, workplace demands, coping behavior, and social environments interact.
  • Be and feel meaningful with a sense of purpose: understanding stress can support approaches concerned with resilience, healthy coping, and well-being in personal and organizational contexts.

What are the best countries and locations to study, intern or work in stress?

  • Countries with strong research environments for stress biology, psychological stress, and mental health: United States, United Kingdom, Australia.
  • Countries with a strong focus on occupational stress, psychosocial working conditions, and workplace health: Sweden, Denmark, Germany.
  • Countries where stress can be studied within broader mental health, psychology, healthcare, and prevention settings: The Netherlands, Canada, United Kingdom.
  • Countries particularly relevant for studying stress prevention, employee well-being, working conditions, and resilience in organizational settings: Denmark, Sweden, The Netherlands, Germany.
  • Countries suitable for interdisciplinary experience connecting stress research with clinical psychology, public health, resilience, and workplace mental health: Australia, Canada, United States.

Where can you find work experience and vacancies for jobs, internships, and voluntary work in stress abroad?

What are things to consider when studying or working abroad in stress?

Further depth: what is stress as a discipline?

What are the main features of stress?

Stress can be examined as an adaptive response involving the body, emotions, thoughts, and behavior when demands disturb a person's normal psychological or physiological balance.

  • Physiological response: Stress can activate the fight-or-flight system, releasing hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol while increasing heart rate, breathing, and available blood sugar.
  • Psychological response: Stress may produce anxiety, worry, frustration, or feelings of being overwhelmed, potentially affecting concentration, thinking, attention, and decision-making.
  • Behavioral response: People under stress may become irritable, withdraw socially, or turn toward coping behaviors that can themselves have negative consequences.
  • Adaptive function: Short periods of stress can mobilize physical and mental resources that allow a person to respond quickly to immediate challenges or threats.
  • Individual variation: People differ in their susceptibility to stress and ability to cope because social support, previous experiences, and personal characteristics can influence responses.

What are important sub-areas of stress?

The supplied material approaches stress through several connected areas, ranging from biological activation and psychological experience to coping, resilience, workplace conditions, and long-term health consequences.

  • Stress physiology: This area concerns bodily activation during stressful situations, including hormonal changes and increases in heart rate, breathing, blood sugar, and available energy.
  • Psychological stress: This area examines emotional and cognitive experiences such as worry, anxiety, frustration, overwhelm, impaired concentration, and changes in decision-making.
  • Coping strategies: Stress management includes approaches such as relaxation exercises, mindfulness meditation, cognitive-behavioral therapy, time management, and other methods of responding to pressure.
  • Workplace stress: Organizational approaches can address work-related pressure by encouraging healthy coping mechanisms and implementing programs intended to support employee well-being.
  • Resilience: This area focuses on emotional regulation, problem-solving, and social support as resources that can strengthen a person's capacity to manage difficult circumstances.

What are key concepts in stress?

Understanding stress depends on distinguishing the demands that trigger a response, the mechanisms activated by those demands, and the resources available for coping and adaptation.

  • Fight-or-flight: This response prepares the body for rapid action by activating physiological systems and releasing hormones that temporarily increase energy and alertness.
  • Adaptation: Stress can encourage adjustment to new circumstances by prompting people to develop coping strategies, acquire skills, and respond differently to future demands.
  • Chronic stress: Persistent and

From language courses to gap year abroad, from work experience to volunteering abroad, from paid work to internship abroad, from mountaineering to diving and from backpacking to travel around the world

What social activities can you do abroad?

    • Opportunities are found in the areas of helping, learning or studying. You can get involved to volunteer in a social project at a school in Africa, Asia or Latin America. You can get involved in nature, in a project with animals or cleaning the sea or beaches. Those who want to learn more can choose for example a language course in Latin America, Spain or South Africa.

What work related activities can you do abroad?

    • If you want to gain work experience, and/or also earn money, go and work abroad. You can combine backpacking in Australia with temporary work. You can work on campsites in Europe or bush camps in Africa. You can pretty much go all over the world to work in the hospitality industry, hotels and hostels, in the healthcare sector or for example at a diving school.

What sports activities to do abroad?

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
