What to take with you to Zambia: spotlighted

Featured items:
  • Documents: Passport with at least six months validity, and copies.
  • Money: The local currency is the Zambian Kwacha (ZMW). Although credit cards are accepted in cities, it is useful to have cash with you for remote areas.
  • Care: Sunscreen and sun block, aftersun
  • Outdoor and practical items: Hat, travel cap or cap, a buff, scarf or bandana for protection from the sun. A good pair of sunglasses.
  • Clothing: Light clothing in neutral colours such as khaki, brown and green (so that you do not scare the animals during the safari!), long clothing for sun and mosquito protection, warm layer for early mornings and evenings. A light waterproof jacket. Swimwear for your chic lodge.
  • Shoes: Comfortable walking shoes and slippers/sandals for at the lodge.
  • Medicines and travel kit: A small first aid kit with plasters, painkillers, anti-diarrhoea medicine, ORS and anti-mosquito repellent. Technique and equipment: world plug with type C, D and G. Power bank, because the power can sometimes go out.
What are some other options for packing as well?
  • Mini binoculars or monocular for spotting wildlife.
  • Headlamp or flashlight.
  • Reusable water bottle with filter.
  • Quick-drying travel towel.
  • International driving license, if you want to rent a car.
  • Mosquito nets, impregnated mosquito nets or mosquito nets if you are going to really remote places. But most lodges have them for you.
  • Keep in mind, while packing, the season in which you go to Zambia: May-August is cooler and drier, September-October is hot and dry, November-April is warm and wet!

Are there mosquitoes in Zambia?

Travel in Zambia

  • For the traveler who loves nature, Zambia is an ideal country. It is a country full of nature parks with an enormous diversity of animals, including special birds. Swim in the water of the Victoria Falls or go on safari and see amazing wild animals (including lions, elephants, leopards, hippos, crocodiles). The people of Zambia are known for their friendliness and hospitality and the food tastes delicious.
  • Go bird watching in one of the national parks.
  • Go rafting or canoeing on the Zambezi (on the border with Zimbabwe)
  • See the rare blue monkey in the Kasanka National Park. This is one of the smaller national parks, but certainly no less beautiful.
  • Are you a fan of extreme sports? Visit the Livingstone. Including bungee jumping (from a height of 111 meters) and abseiling (over a gorge).
  • Visit one of the national parks: North and South Luangwa National Park, Kafue National Park (the second largest national park in the world) and the parks near the Zambezi.
  • Check the oldest copper mine in Zambia, near Luanshya.
  • Go to Lusaka, the capital, with the Kabwate Cultural Village (an open-air museum about Zambian culture) and the impressive cathedral.
  • Be prepared regarding the safety in Lusaka.
  • Watch out: be aware that cars drive on the left.

Welk visum regelen voor een reis of vrijwilligerswerk naar Zambia?

Toeristenvisum

Een toeristenvisum is verplicht voor Zambia en kan worden aangevraagd bij de ambassade van Zambia in Brussel. Je kunt een visum ook aan de grens kopen, dit kan bij elke grensovergang. Een visum is geldig voor maximaal 3 maanden. Het visum kan verlengd worden door een aanvraag te doen bij een immigratiebureau in een van de grote steden (dit moet een maand voor het aflopen van het visum). Waarschijnlijk kan dit nog twee keer voor 3 maanden, maar vraag dit altijd even na. Een return- of onwardticket en een adres waar je verblijft zijn verplicht. Als je korter dan 24 uur in Zambia bent is het niet nodig om een transitvisum aan te vragen. 

KAZA Univisa: met dit speciale reisvisum mag je tot 30 dagen reizen door Zambia en Zimbabwe en zelfs een dagje naar Botswana (via de Kazungula-grenspost). Dit visum wordt veel gebruikt door reizigers die de Victoria Falls van beide zijden van de grens willen bezoeken. Aan te vragen bij aankomst in Zambia of Zimbabwe

Vrijwilligersvisum

Je mag in Zambia geen vrijwilligerswerk doen (ook niet voor een kleine periode) op een toeristenvisum, hier wordt vrij streng op gecontroleerd. Je zult een businessvisum moeten aanvragen. Op dit visum kun je 30 dagen blijven. Waarschijnlijk zul je na die periode een werkvisum moeten aanvragen, maar dit is niet helemaal duidelijk.

Benodigdheden voor een businessvisum:

  • Twee ingevulde aanvraagformulieren
  • Twee pasfoto's
  • Paspoort dat nog minimaal 6 maanden geldig is.
  • Gecertificeerde kopie van paspoort
  • (Kopie van) je vluchtgegevens
  • Brief van je werkgever in Nederland.
  • Brief van de “werkgever” met daarin de uitleg over het werk dat je gaat uitvoeren.

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
