What is a TEFL Course for Teaching English abroad as a Foreign Language

  • TEFL literally means Teaching English as a Foreign Language. In a nutshell, a TEFL course is a training program which gives you the skills and confidence you need to teach English as a foreign language to children and adults.
  • TEFL: The TEFL course is entirely in English, and is made up of various modules aimed at developing didactic skills and the methodology of teaching the English language to non-native speakers. With the globally recognized TEFL diploma, you demonstrate the essential skills for an English teacher. Internationally, the demand for English teachers is increasing and with a TEFL course you significantly increase your chances of a paid teaching job!

Why should you take a TEFL course?

  • The TEFL course is a course that trains you, without a background as a teacher, to teach English to children and adults.
  • The course is entirely in English and focuses on developing teaching skills and methods for teaching English to non-native speakers.
  • The demand for English teachers has been growing internationally for years, and a TEFL course will significantly increase your chances of finding a paid teaching job.
  • There is a wide range of course options available, from online courses to intensive practical courses in Spain, Italy, Thailand or Costa Rica. All courses can be supplemented with short modules for those who want to specialize in grammar and specific target groups.

Where is the best place to take a TEFL course?

  • Taking the TEFL course in the country or region where you want to start your teaching career can be very helpful, because the TEFL school generaly has a local network for English teacher jobs.
  • Go to Malaga, Spain: take your TEFL course including job search assistance
  • Go to Rome, Italy: start working as an English teacher in Italy after your TEFL course
  • Go to Bangkok, Thailand: Intensive TEFL course with practice hours with real students
  • Go to Chiang Mai, Thailand: onsite courses on level 3 and level 5, paid intership program available
  • Go to Costa Rica: Intensive 4-week TEFL course with practice hours with Costa Rican students
  • The online course can be done at home, but also while traveling the world, as long as there is an internet connection.

What kind of Teaching jobs can you apply for with a TEFL certificate?

  • In non-Western countries paid teacher are most often hired at schools where the parents of the children belong to the richer upper class of society or are stationed in that country as expats. People who speak fluent English are often hired to encourage conversation, rather than to teach grammar. Basic knowledge of English grammar is a big advantage when students come to you with strange questions. There are many non-western countries where you can teach English, even if English is not your native language. In order to guarantee the quality of education, a certificate or (TEFL) diploma is increasingly requested.
  • As a voluntary English teacher most teaching positions are available in less developed countries and rural areas. Teaching materials and educational facilities are often limited
What are the main differences between an online TEFL course and an intensive TEFL course abroad?

What are the main differences between an online TEFL course and an intensive TEFL course abroad?

Both the online TEFL course and a local 4-week course train you in roughly the same skills, namely teaching skills in the English language. Some of the main differences to take into account when picking a TEFL course:

  • Planning and time commitment: One of the main differences is that the online course allows you to work much more at your own pace. This makes it easy to combine the online course with your studies or job, for example, or even while traveling abroad. If you have time for a one-month course (e.g., during your vacation or sabbatical), then the intensive practical course is the right choice for you.
  • Interaction: In the 4-week course, you will be taught in a classroom, which means you will get more practical experience than online and have a lot of direct contact with your teacher(s) and fellow students. With online courses, the amount of contact with teachers and fellow students varies greatly depending on the provider. In so called 'blended' TEFL courses a mixture of live interaction and personal planning options is offered
  • Practical experience: Local courses often offer more opportunities to practice in practical situations, sometimes even with practical lessons at a local elementary school, for example.
  • Target group: The four-week intensive courses are primarily aimed at people who are seriously pursuing a teaching career and who want to teach for a longer period of time. It may also be that your employer requires a 4-week practical course. If your goal is to teach abroad as temporary work in the run-up to emigration or during your backpacking trip, then the online TEFL course is an option that will enable you to teach anywhere in the world, either voluntarily or for pay.
  • Career assistance: although most online providers offer some degree of CV writing and job application assistance, local providers in particular often have strong ties with educational institutions in the region, making it easier to find a (paid) job locally. If you don't yet know where you want to work, the more broadly oriented job boards of online TEFL providers might be more suitable.
  • The price: Finally, there is also a difference in price. The online course costs between €200 and €500, while the four-week practical course costs around €1,500.
What is the difference between TEFL, TESOL, CELTA and TESL?

What is the difference between TEFL, TESOL, CELTA and TESL?

What do the abbreviations TEFL, TESOL, CELTA and TESL stand for?

  • TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language
  • TESOL stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
  • CELTA stands for Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults
  • TESL stands for Teaching English as a Second Language

What is the difference between these TEFL, TESOL, CELTA and TESL certificates?

  • In practice, the difference between these courses is relatively small. The target group for the courses are people who want to improve their English skills
  • In many countries a teaching skills certificate is requested, this can be TEFL, TESL, TESOL or CELTA.
  • TESL is a course that fits best to people who want to teach English to foreigners in an English-speaking country
  • TESOL tends to include practical English skills that help learners adjust to life in an English-speaking environment but is generally seen as broader in scope then the TESL course
  • The TEFL course is mainly preparing students to teach English in countries where the first language isn't English.
  • The CELTA certificate always contains practical teaching training and is an internationally recognized qualification that usually ranks above the other three certificates.
Cost or investment: what is the price of the TEFL course?

Cost or investment: what is the price of the TEFL course?

How much does a TEFL course cost?

  • Because obtaining a TEFL certificate will positively influence both your job prospects and your average salary, it is best to view the cost of the TEFL course as an investment in yourself.
  • In many cases, you will recoup the cost of the TEFL course within a month of working as an English teacher.
  • When you compare the TEFL certificate with other adult education courses, it is a very affordable option.

Online TEFL course

  • For a 120-hour online TEFL course, the costs vary from 125 to 450 euros.
  • If you add extra modules and specializations to the course, the price can rise to almost a thousand euros.
  • The price depends greatly on the number of hours you receive instruction, the amount of personal feedback, and the amount of direct contact with teachers.

TEFL Practical Course Abroad

  • The intensive nature of the TEFL practical courses ‘on site’ means that these courses are more expensive than the online courses.
  • The four-week practical courses usually consist of approximately 120 teaching hours, plus homework assignments, bringing the total effort to between 150 and 180 hours.
  • 4 weeks full-time or 6 weeks part-time TEFL course in Rome => €1,600
  • 4 weeks TEFL in Malaga => €1,600
  • 4 weeks TEFL in Bangkok, via Essential TEFL => €2,300
  • 4 weeks TEFL in Chiang Mai, via SEE TEFL => €1,200
  • 4 weeks TEFL in Playa Samara, via Costa Rica TEFL => €1,550

TEFL Discounts and offers

  • When making your selection, try not to let the price, and in particular the many temporary offers, weigh too heavily in your decision. The choice of course location, course composition, and additional career services can easily offset this price difference.
  • Many providers offer early bird discounts of up to 20 percent. Daily and weekly offers often include discounts of up to 75 percent. Please note that these often show ‘normal’ prices that are never actually charged.

A way for students to get to know each other in a new setting is to let them find someone who has had a specific experience. The students will ask each other predetermined questions, such as:

'Look for someone who has...'

  • visited another country
  • played in a band
  • met someone famous

Think about how many questions you want the students to ask each other. Think about the instructions you'll give about answering the questions, and about the questions which are culturally accepted in the country where you are teaching.

Teaching English without Teaching English: TEDxTalk

Teaching English without Teaching English: TEDxTalk

Teaching English to students who's first language is not English can be quite difficult. They may be able to answer certain questions and do well on tests about the topics that they had to learn. However, when it comes to having a regular conversation with your students or asking about something outside of their learning area, students usually have great difficulty with answering questions. In this TEDx video, Robert Guzman, a full professor at the University of Puerto Rico, explains his teaching method that he calls "teaching English without teaching English". It is a very interesting video to watch,

Teaching English Abroad - Does age matter?

Teaching English Abroad - Does age matter?

Teaching English is a popular way to work abroad for a few months or even years. Although some cities are crowded with English teachers, more provincial areas still have many who are looking to improve their English.

There are always many interesting questions involved, such as one today. A woman asked if age mattered when looking for a teaching job abroad. Although you can travel (and work) at any age - and it's probably more about your mindset than anything else.. Still in some countries of for some organizations it will be a deal breaker if you are over 60...

Hopefully for those of you who are looking for opportunities to go abroad after retiring and looking for a teaching job > this interview with Donna who teaches English and travels the world at age 68 is inspiring!

Turning tables: learning from students while teaching English abroad

Turning tables: learning from students while teaching English abroad

Recently I read a nice blog written by "TEFL" teacher Ashley Sheets. Ashley, or Miss Sheets, shows that teaching a (foreign) language abroad also is about learning the other way around. Learning about working and living in other cultures, acquiring new competencies, getting insights in other ways of living, etc.

/// Ashley's blog ///

Turning Tables

Miss Ashley, Miss Sheets, Ashley teacher.....I get called a lot of things. I’ve taught English as a second or foreign language in quite a few different countries over the past seven years, and my work in international schools has given me access to students from more countries than I can remember. And these students have all had different names for me. In South Korea it was Ashley teacher (usually pronounced “Ash-uh-lee teach-uh!” by the little ones in my kindergarten class). In the sweltering Marshall Islands it was Miss Ashley. My Somali students referred to me simply, respectfully, as “Miss”.

Being in a room full of rambunctious 5 year old Koreans, all speaking their mother tongue and running amuck with the level of energy that is generally afforded to those of their age, was never something I expected in life. Nor did I ever expect to spend a year of my life teaching largely uninspired but utterly delightful island kids on a tiny piece of land the size of a football field (the same kids who couldn’t stand grammar lessons, but serenaded me with ukulele singalongs and shared their ramen/kool-aid mixtures with me). It just goes to show that if anything can be said about teaching English abroad, it’s that it is never, ever, dull!

For everything that I have ever helped a students to learn, they have taught me something in return. Regardless of age - child, teenager, adult - they all have something to teach me, and I could not possibly have chosen a profession that had more life lessons in store for me. Sometimes these lessons have been wonderful, sometimes difficult, sometimes life-affirming. When I lived in other countries and taught in their schools, I was a complete and total outsider, doing my best to swim against the current and offer up my students all the English that they could absorb during the short time they had with me. But outside of those classrooms, I was utterly immersed in learning as much as I could about the language and culture that enveloped me almost completely. I was a tiny foreign fish in a very large pond, and I always felt that way.

But teaching in English speaking countries, specifically in America and in the UK, has been a different experience altogether. Helping my little fish in the big pond that I call home, where I can speak and understand the language inside and outside of school, creates a completely different atmosphere for learning, and adds a sense of urgency for these students that just want to communicate with the world they find themselves living in.

One of my very first teaching experiences is still, to my mind, one of the most rewarding I’ve had. In my hometown in Ohio, there exists a huge population of Somali refugees that have permanently emigrated to the USA. Years ago, I served as a teaching assistant in a class of only Somali woman, friends and neighbors all and ranging in age from 16 - 80, with very little English knowledge among them. These women needed the language, not just to move toward some goal of “assimilation”, or for a big test; but to find jobs and help their children in school, to fight with their aggressive landlords, and run their small businesses.

It was the purest form of language learning, and many of the women didn’t even know how to hold a pencil. My oldest student was nearly 80-although she couldn’t confirm it, as she had no way to be entirely sure of the date and year of her birth. With a wide, toothless grin she came to class every evening and, along with her classmates, helped me realize that I couldn’t really see myself doing anything else but helping people just like her learn my language, if that’s what they wanted or needed to do.

Now I teach in a school with a huge mix of students from countries around the world. Every day, we come together, and we teach each other. I refuse to think that they are the only ones learning anything, and hopefully they are learning as much from me as I do from them. So Ashley teacher it is. Or Miss Ashley. Miss Sheets works too. But what the students call me isn’t as important as what we continue to learn from each other. We’ve got a nice thing going.

From language courses to gap year abroad, from work experience to volunteering abroad, from paid work to internship abroad, from mountaineering to diving and from backpacking to travel around the world

What social activities can you do abroad?

    • Opportunities are found in the areas of helping, learning or studying. You can get involved to volunteer in a social project at a school in Africa, Asia or Latin America. You can get involved in nature, in a project with animals or cleaning the sea or beaches. Those who want to learn more can choose for example a language course in Latin America, Spain or South Africa.

What work related activities can you do abroad?

    • If you want to gain work experience, and/or also earn money, go and work abroad. You can combine backpacking in Australia with temporary work. You can work on campsites in Europe or bush camps in Africa. You can pretty much go all over the world to work in the hospitality industry, hotels and hostels, in the healthcare sector or for example at a diving school.

What sports activities to do abroad?

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
