  • Sea turtles can be found in almost all oceans, except for the very cold areas and the polar regions. Most sea turtle protection, rescue and rehabilitation centers are located near nesting sites
  • The best places to find internships, jobs or volunteer projects with sea turtles are:
  • Australia: at the Great Barrier Reef or Cook Island
  • Costa Rica: at Tortuguero National Park
  • Ecuador: at the Galapagos Islands, including turtoises
  • Greece: several projects around the peninsula
  • Indonesia: near Bunaken. Pulau Weh or Raja Ampat
  • Malaysia: at Sipidan or the Perhantians
  • Mexico: near Playa del Carmen
  • Nicaragua: at the La Flor reserve
  • Oman: at Musandam peninsula

Volunteer on a Sea Turtle Research Expedition on the Maldives

Hungry for an adventure in a remote part of the world? Explore one of the most remote parts of the Maldives as a volunteer with the Olive Ridley Project’s Sea Turtle Research Expedition. Join the Olive Ridley Project as a research volunteer on a three-week expedition in Haa Alif Atoll. The project focusses on data collection in the 'black hole' of turtle data. The findings will help protect the habitat of sea turtles and raise awareness. In addition, you may be involved in the rescue of entangled sea turtles and will be trained in basic sea turtle first aid.

How much does it cost to join the expedition?

In order to sustain the research, we ask for a donation to cover your expenses and the costs of running the expedition: 3 Weeks: $2,700 per person

Your donation will cover:

  • Return domestic flights and boat transfers from Male to Haa Alif. Atoll.
  • Accommodation for the duration of your stay
  • All meals for the duration of your stay

Via dit project van Vrijwillig Wereldwijd kun jij bijdragen aan het welzijn van schildpadden op Sri Lanka!

Helaas worden deze dieren met uitsterven bedreigd. Dit project betaalt lokale vissers voor schildpad eieren, en laat de eieren vervolgens uitkomen. Als de dieren klaar zijn voor de buitenwereld, worden ze vrijgelaten. Zo worden eieren en baby-schildpadden veiliggesteld en kunnen ze zich verder voortplanten na hun vrijlating.

Als vrijwilliger help je met het schoonmaken van de schildpad-verblijven, moet er zeewater gehaald worden en ben je aanwezig bij verschillende gemeenschapsactiviteiten. Het project ontvangt ook dagtrips van toeristen, aangezien zij een belangrijke bron van inkomsten zijn voor dit schildpadden project.
