Travel to Seychelles to backpack, study, intern, volunteer, work, or live as a digital nomad, expat or emigrant?
Backpacking or traveling in Seychelles?
- An island country where you have a lot to choose from, namely 115 beautiful islands full of relaxation, beautiful beaches and tropical nature. But you better break your piggy bank, because it is not cheap. For the backpacker, using ferries between the islands and walking, cycling or buses on the islands can reduce the costs!
- Activities spotting: the clear number one is of course snorkeling and diving, and further… visit Vallée de Mai where you can see the rare Coco de meer palm; cycle along beautiful rocky beach on La Digue; visit the pink sand of Anse Source d’Argent; admire reef sharks in Baie Ternay Marine National Park; explore one of the largest atolls in the world, Aldabra; taste local delicacies at the markets in Victoria; hike in Morne Seychellois National Park and discover tropical forests; go on dolphin and whale tours and visit old plantations and colonial buildings. Animal spotting: giant tortoises, reef sharks, Seychelles fruit bats, dolphins and whales, black parrot, lobsters, red-tailed tropicbird, chameleon, crabs, geckos.
- Food spotting: grilled fish, octopus curry, bat curry (yes, you read that right), Coco de Mer sweets, boudin, katkat bananas (fortunately it is not what you read here), boudin, pickles, lentil stew.
Study in Seychelles?
- If you want to learn more about unique marine biology, then you have come to the right place. Of course, there are other study options and the reputation of the courses has been growing in recent years, partly due to an increase in international collaborations.
- Study cities: Anse Royale on Mahé.
- Language: English.
Internships in Seychelles?
- The Seychelles offer internships mainly within NGOs, conservation, and tourism. This is a great opportunity to gain practical experience in a very special environment. Internships can be expensive due to the high cost of living.
- Competencies: practical experience in marine conservation, intercultural communication, English and French language skills, coping with changing circumstances.
Volunteering in Seychelles?
- In Seychelles, volunteering mainly revolves around conservation projects such as turtle conservation, ecosystem restoration and marine conservation.
- Working in Seychelles?
- There are quite a few jobs to be found in Seychelles. Think for example of jobs in tourism, education, conservation and healthcare.
- Work culture: just like island life, it is relaxed of course.
Working as a digital nomad in Seychelles?
- Beautiful and expensive. And although the internet is reasonable, it can vary per island. There are no co-working spaces or they are scarce, and here and there you can find some suitable cafés to work. But of course there is a lot of natural beauty. A unique location, but not for everyone. Favorite locations: Mahé, Praslin, La Digue.
Living in Seychelles?
- Living in the Seychelles feels like a tropical dream life, but it is expensive. Expats often find shelter on Mahé or Praslin because of the amenities and the work.
- Why yes, why not? It is beautiful, the lifestyle is relaxed and sun worshippers can enjoy themselves to the fullest, all year round. It is also safe and you can get away with English, nice and easy! But… It is expensive, you are dependent on transport by boat or plane, the housing options are often small due to the limited space and the recreational options can feel limited at some point.
- Education: there are international schools on Mahé.
- Safety: generally safe and with little crime.
- Health insurance: although healthcare on the larger islands is relatively good, it may be necessary to fly to another country for specific treatments. So make sure you have your own good health insurance.
