Luggage label or suitcase tag: what is it, and should you take it with you on a trip or while backpacking?

What is a luggage label or suitcase tag?

  • A luggage tag is a card or tag with a number of details that can ensure that if your luggage is lost, it can be traced back to you.
  • Luggage tags are also called address cards, luggage tags or suitcase tags.

What do you write on a luggage tag?

  • Try to limit your details to the bare minimum to reach you (e.g. telephone number - flight numbers, etc.).
  • Address details of your luggage can be tricky (not everyone needs to know that your house or room has been abandoned).

How does a luggage tag or label work on your bag or suitcase?

  • You attach loose labels to handles or in a place where they do not easily come loose. Some bags or suitcases have specific label locations.
  • There are also labels with only a barcode. Your luggage is then easy to trace, but your personal details remain private.

What can you use a luggage tag or suitcase tag for when traveling and backpacking?

  • Do you also have one of those standard suitcases? Then your luggage tag will certainly help you recognize your luggage at the airport, on the bus or perhaps even from another backpacker.
  • Someone can also easily contact you when your luggage gets lost or has gone the wrong way. Luggage gets lost more often than you think, especially during transfers, incorrectly checked-in luggage or identical suitcases.
  • Some airlines require a luggage or suitcase tag.

When do you take a luggage tag with you on a trip or while backpacking?

  • All trips: make sure that every piece of luggage (including your daypack!) is always traceable!

Where can you buy a luggage tag or tag locally in the world?

  • At airports, in travel shops or larger supermarkets.
  • Sometimes they are also available in hostels, outdoor shops or tourist spots.
  • Or make a DIY label yourself with sturdy paper, a marker and tape/key ring.
