Lizards abroad and while traveling: are they dangerous, where do you encounter them, where can you see them?
What is a lizard?
- A lizard is a reptile, typically characterized by an elongated body, four short legs positioned at the sides of the body, scales, and a long tail that drags along the ground.
- Lizards are generally cold-blooded and eat insects and plants, depending on the species and environment. Larger lizard species also eat small mammals.
- Well-known groups of lizards include geckos, iguanas, monitor lizards, and chameleons.
What is a gecko?
- A gecko is a small type of lizard with a broad head.
- Geckos are often sandy-colored, though they come in many other colors.
- Geckos are adept at walking on walls and ceilings and make a sound that somewhat resembles the call “gecko.”
Are geckos or lizards dangerous?
- Most lizard species, such as geckos, are not dangerous to humans.
- Only a few of the thousands of species are venomous to some degree. But if a lizard manages to bite through your skin, it is important to rinse and disinfect the wound.
Which lizards are dangerous to humans?
- Gila monster: This slow-moving lizard has a very strong, tenacious bite that delivers a painful venom into the skin. The venom is almost never fatal, and a bite is usually the result of one's own actions.
- Komodo dragon: Famous for its size and reputation as a killer of humans. In reality, these predators rarely pose a serious threat to people, although a bite from a Komodo dragon is extremely unpleasant, and a blow from its tail can deliver a powerful impact.
Where can you encounter lizards and geckos while traveling?
- Monitor lizards inhabit Africa, Australia, and Asia.
- The Komodo dragon is found in Indonesia, particularly on the Komodo Islands and the island of Flores.
- Iguanas are found across Latin America, the Caribbean, and Fiji.
- The 2,100 species of geckos can be found in all tropical and subtropical countries. Some species also inhabit desert and steppe regions. Certain gecko species are fond of human dwellings; you might regularly encounter them in your bedroom, where they keep the room clean by eating cockroaches, mosquitoes, and other insects.
- Chameleons are most abundant in Africa, with Madagascar renowned for having the greatest diversity of chameleon species.
- You can try to spot the Gila monster in the deserts of the southern United States and Mexico.
Can you do volunteer work or an internship involving geckos and lizards?
- Yes, you can participate as an intern or volunteer in various projects focused on reptile conservation, research into species distribution, or the restoration of reptile habitats.
- You can also dedicate time to caring for lizards and other reptiles at animal rescue centers. These centers often take in larger lizard species and reptiles that were kept as pets before being abandoned, neglected, or confiscated.
- There are projects in Madagascar where you can assist with chameleon research.
- In the Galápagos Islands (Ecuador), many nature conservation projects will also bring you into contact with the large lizards native to the area.
