Can you use DEET during pregnancy?
Using DEET during pregnancy:
- Officially, the use of DEET during pregnancy is not recommended.
- During the first three months of pregnancy or if you are trying to conceive, you should limit your use of DEET. Use it only when absolutely necessary; then use low percentages.
- As a precaution, DEET use can be minimized in the first trimester by limiting exposure to mosquitoes. Don't go outside after sunset, wear protective clothing, and wash off DEET immediately upon entering a mosquito-free area.
- If a location is free of disease-carrying mosquitoes or ticks, it might be better to choose a natural product, depending on the ingredients.
- In all cases, the positive effects of DEET outweigh any potential drawbacks if the risk of diseases like malaria and dengue fever is high.
- Breastfeeding and DEET are fine, but do not apply DEET to or around the nipple.
