Intro

Backpacking or traveling in Haiti?

  • Haiti attracts adventurous travelers who are not afraid of rugged, unpaved trails and unique experiences. The country is known for its many natural disasters in recent years, which have also had an impact on the tourism sector. However, there is still much to be found - from the arty capital Port-au-Prince to the impressive Citadelle Laferrière, it is an original destination where you can experience authentic Caribbean life without too many tourists.
  • Activities to spot: visit the Citadelle Laferrière and admire the beautiful views; cool off in the Bassins Bleu; experience a voodoo festival; spot art in Jacmel; snorkel and dive at Île-à-Vache; see colonial architecture in Cap-Haïtien; taste rum, wherever you go!; climb Haiti's highest mountain - the Morne La Selle; explore Port-au-Prince; participate in the Jacmel Carnival.
  • Animal spotting: Hispaniolan trogon, Haitian hutia, green sea turtle, boa, fossa lizard, Caribbean monk seals, lionfish, hummingbirds.
  • Food spotting: griot, tassot, diri ak djon djon, lambi, bouyon, akra, banann peze, rhum barbancourt.

Study in Haiti?

  • In Haiti you can choose from several institutions with decent study programs. You are in a very cultural environment and it can therefore be interesting to follow Afro-Caribbean studies, for example.
  • Study cities: Port-au-Prince is the most important study city.
  • Language: French and Creole.

Internship in Haiti?

  • There are internship opportunities in Haiti, but there are not very many. Due to the low “human development index” there are many challenges in the country. This is also where most internship opportunities lie. For example, you can work in education, health care and social work. There are also opportunities in finance, international relations and sustainable development.
  • Competencies: social skills, intercultural communication, problem solving, experience with development projects, French language skills.

Volunteering in Haiti?

  • The same applies to volunteering as to internships. It mainly revolves around community development, education, healthcare and nature conservation.

Working in Haiti?

  • Haiti and the local economy have had a lot to endure. As a result, there are few employment opportunities, outside of international (aid) organizations and NGOs.

Working as a digital nomad in Haiti?

  • It is not a typical destination for digital nomads, mainly because of the lack of good infrastructure. However, if you like a challenge, it can be a special destination with a lot of culture and friendly people. And if you look carefully, especially in the capital, you will also find reasonable internet.
  • Favorite location: Port-au-Prince.

Living in Haiti?

  • If you move to Haiti, there are two clear sides. On the one hand, the people are warm, there is a lot of culture, music and dance and there is beautiful nature. However, Haiti is also a very poor country and life can be quite hard. There are few professional opportunities, unless you focus on development work or want to start a new business. The country is also prone to natural disasters, which you should definitely take into account.
  • Education: The best schools are in Port-au-Prince, but opportunities are limited.
  • Expat community: Consists mainly of aid workers and employees of NGOs and is relatively small.
  • Safety: Haiti has security challenges, especially in the capital where it is important to be cautious and vigilant.
  • Culture: The culture in Haiti is colorful and diverse, strongly influenced by voodoo, music, and dance. Traditional customs and festivities such as carnival and voodoo rituals are important in daily life.
  • Note: Flexibility and adaptability are key in Haiti. Expats should prepare for limited facilities, possible safety risks, a slower pace, and the possibility of natural disasters.
  • Health insurance: Healthcare is often limited. Many expats opt for private care or travel to other countries for medical treatment. So make sure you have your own health insurance with good coverage.

Why Should You Take Out A Travel Insurance?

  • The chance of getting injured or ill is generally higher than when you would have stayed at home. The medical care you will need can be very expensive, even more so if you are treated in a private clinic.

  • If you have to fly back because of family circumstances, the flights might be more expensive than your original flight because you have to fly on short notice.

  • You might have to deal with the damage, loss or theft of your luggage.

  • In case of emergency it can be difficult to figure out what to do. A good travel insurance will have an assistance team on standby for you 24/7 and will be able to tell you what steps to take.

Why Should You Specifically Take Out A Travel Insurance For A Long Trip Abroad?

  • Often regular travel or health insurances only cover trips for a maximum number of days (for example 60, 90 or 180 days).

  • Depending on your home country, your health insurance might not offer any coverage for treatment abroad.

  • During a long trip you might consider specific activities, like paid work or volunteering. Regular travel insurances often don’t cover these kind of activities. The same goes for adventurous/ hazardous sports like skydiving, scuba-diving and bungee jumping.

  • Violent crime is common. There is a risk of kidnapping, murder, robbery, sexual violence and car hijacking. The risks are greatest in the evening and in remote areas.
  • Violence from certain gangs is most intense in Port-au-Prince. Kidnappings occur, not only of locals, but also of foreigners.
  • There are regular outages in multiple ways in the country. There are also often shortages of facilities such as power, water, food and fuel.

What should you look out for in terms of diseases in Haiti?

  • Infectious diseases and mosquito-borne diseases are common in Haiti. Due to the state of health care, it is important to try to prevent these types of diseases.
  • Zika, dengue and malaria are among the diseases that occur in Haiti.
  • Cholera outbreaks are common. Cholera is spread through water and food. Only drink bottled water and eat safely prepared food.
  • Be aware that HIV/AIDS is relatively common.

What should you pay attention to when it comes to traffic in Haiti?

  • Driving in Haiti can be quite chaotic. The roads are in poor condition, or almost non-existent, and the traffic consists of people and various animals in addition to cars. Most foreigners choose to hire a driver.
  • Driving with alcohol in your system is prohibited, but many people do it anyway. This can cause dangerous situations, especially in the evening.
  • In the cities, traffic can stand still for a very long time, which can spread further. So make sure you always have enough water and something to snack.
  • Public transport mainly consists of “tap-taps”. These are a kind of small, colorful, open buses. And although they look attractive, traveling with them is not recommended. In the event of an accident, you can easily be thrown out of the bus and the tap-taps are also an easy target for kidnapping.

  • Is the trip to Haiti and your return sufficiently covered? Are you sufficiently covered before, during and after your activities? Which insurance best suits your trip and your activity? Read more about insurances for abroad on JoHoinsurances.org.

What emigration and expat insurance can you take out for Haiti, if you are going to live there for a while?

  • International health insurance with medical evacuation coverage is an absolute must for Haiti.
  • So make sure your insurance covers medical evacuation as well as coverage in neighboring countries. Read more about insurances for abroad on Expatinsurances.org.

From language courses to gap year abroad, from work experience to volunteering abroad, from paid work to internship abroad, from mountaineering to diving and from backpacking to travel around the world

What social activities can you do abroad?

    • Opportunities are found in the areas of helping, learning or studying. You can get involved to volunteer in a social project at a school in Africa, Asia or Latin America. You can get involved in nature, in a project with animals or cleaning the sea or beaches. Those who want to learn more can choose for example a language course in Latin America, Spain or South Africa.

What work related activities can you do abroad?

    • If you want to gain work experience, and/or also earn money, go and work abroad. You can combine backpacking in Australia with temporary work. You can work on campsites in Europe or bush camps in Africa. You can pretty much go all over the world to work in the hospitality industry, hotels and hostels, in the healthcare sector or for example at a diving school.

What sports activities to do abroad?

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
