Frogs and toads abroad and while traveling: are they dangerous, where do you encounter them, where can you see them?
What are frogs?
- Frogs make up the largest group of amphibians. There are over 7,000 known species, found all over the world.
- Toads are a subgroup of frogs. All toads are frogs, but most frogs are not toads.
Are frogs dangerous?
- Some frog species have toxins on their skin as a defense against predators. This poison is rarely dangerous to humans but can cause skin and eye irritation.
- The photogenic yet highly toxic poison dart frogs of the tropical jungles in Central and South America are dangerously poisonous to the touch.
- Poison dart frogs are toxic due to their diet of poisonous insects, and each species produces its own unique toxin. The vast majority of poison dart frogs are not lethal to humans. However, the golden poison frog is one of the most toxic animals in the world, carrying enough poison to kill ten adults.
- Poison dart frogs kept in captivity generally eat non-toxic insects, so they are not toxic themselves.
Where can you see frogs abroad?
- Frogs live in moist environments. Tropical rainforests, swamps, and damp forests are the best places to spot them.
- Costa Rica, Panama, and Nicaragua are excellent destinations for seeing the colorful frogs of Latin America. These frogs are small and—despite their bright colors—can be quite hard to find, but an experienced nature guide can help you discover many more species.
- Beautiful frogs are also found in the forests of Colombia and Ecuador.
- Borneo and Sumatra (Indonesia) are home to beautiful, though often poisonous, tree frogs.
Can you do volunteer work or an internship involving frogs and toads?
- Various research groups are active in the tropics, studying the distribution and diversity of frogs. This type of fieldwork is often more accessible to biology students than to 'ordinary' volunteers.
- Nature conservation projects in tropical forests and ecosystems indirectly help protect frogs. During such projects, you may frequently be surprised by these beautiful creatures.
- In Western Europe, you can volunteer at various locations during the toad migration to help carry toads across the road—preventing them from ending up under car tires—and you will encounter other frogs and salamanders along the way as well.
