Packing list for Croatia, travel insurance for Croatia and taking your belongings
What to take to Croatia: brief
To pack and check:
- Documents: a valid passport. Your travel document must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Croatia when you're an EU citizen. When you have a passport from outside the EU, it must be valid for at least 3 months after your departure. A copy of your travel document and your travel insurance are useful to have both digitally and offline.
- Money: Croatia uses the euro. In cities and tourist areas, you can pay with a debit or credit card almost everywhere. Some cash is useful for smaller businesses, markets, beach bars, and remote places.
- Clothing: light clothing for the warm summer months, with a few layers for the evenings and for spring and autumn. Also bring something that covers your shoulders and knees when visiting churches and other religious sites. Long, lightweight trousers and a rain jacket are useful for hiking. And swimwear, which may well be the most important item of all.
- Shoes: sneakers for cities and easy walks, plus sturdy hiking shoes for national parks and mountainous areas. Water shoes are recommended along the rocky Adriatic coast, also because of the many sea urchins.
- Care and hygiene: sunscreen with a high protection factor, lip balm, and aftersun.
- Outdoors and handy items: sunglasses, a sun hat or cap, a reusable water bottle, a daypack, and a quick-drying towel.
- Packing and protection: a rain cover for your backpack and a waterproof pouch for your phone, camera, and other belongings, especially for boat trips, kayaking, and swimming.
- Medicines and travel first-aid kit: personal medication, plasters, blister plasters, painkillers, and possibly ORS. A tick remover and small first-aid kit are useful for hiking.
- Technology and equipment: a travel adapter for type C and F plugs. A power bank is useful during long hikes, boat trips, and road trips.
- Safety: watch out for pickpockets in busy tourist areas. Forest and wildfires can occur in summer, especially during prolonged periods of drought and heat. During hot periods, keep an eye on local news and follow the instructions of the authorities. Bring enough water when you are hiking in national parks or other natural areas. Some places have very few facilities along the way.
To consider:
- A foldable beach bag.
- A snorkel set for the Adriatic coast.
- Hiking poles for longer mountain hikes.

- Extra water bottles for hikes in hot, dry areas.
- An offline hiking map can be very useful.
- A small cool bag or insulated bag for road trips and beach days.
- Insect repellent if you are prone to mosquito bites and are visiting the lakes in inland Croatia.
