Bedreigd koraal

CoralGardening bestrijdt de wereldwijde bedreiging van koraalriffen. Allerlei soorten dieren worden beschermd en vinden voedsel door koraal; van vissen tot haaien tot schildpadden.
Door massatoerisme, verontreiniging, klimaatverandering en overbevissing wordt koraal beschadigd en sterft het. Dit heeft grote maritieme, sociale en economische gevolgen. Sommige vissoorten kunnen bijvoorbeeld uitsterven zonder koraal, waardoor vissers agressieve middelen gaan gebruiken om de vissen die er nog wel zijn te vangen. Hier lijdt de vis-verwerkende industrie direct onder.
Het verlies van koraal is dus voor zowel maritiem leven als voor mensen een probleem.

Herstellen en beschermen

CoralGardening zet zich in voor het kweken van koraalriffen, om zo gedane schade te herstellen. Dit kweken gebeurt met hulp van vrijwilligers en het gebruik van lokale materialen en arbeidskrachten. Zo krijgt de economie terplekke een boost.
Naast het herstellen is het beschermen van koraal ook van belang; daarom houdt CoralGardening zich via de CoralGarden Academy ook bezig met educatie over behoud en bescherming van ecosystemen en het stimuleren van duurzaam toerisme.
