The WILPF
The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) is an international non-governmental organisation (NGO) with National Sections covering every continent, an International Secretariat based in Geneva, and a New York office focused on the work of the United Nations (UN). Since our establishment in 1915, we have brought together women from around the world who are united in working for peace by non-violent means and promoting political, economic and social justice for all. Our approach is always non-violent, and we use existing international legal and political frameworks to achieve fundamental change in the way states conceptualise and address issues of gender, militarism, peace and security.
To learn more about WILPF, read the Annual Reports.
WILPF is currently branched in 47 countries and continues to expand. It's the oldest organisation for women's peace. WILPF currently has four active programmes
- Disarmanant: This program has been the WILPF's main goal ever they've been established in 1915. To achieve total and universal disarmament.
- Human rights: This program focusses on long lasting peace across the world
- Women, peace and security: This program focusses on more peace, rights and participation for women.
- Crisis response programme: This program focusses on strengthening women’s capacity and access to engage effectively in transition and peace processes.
WILPF strives for fundemental change in how states conceptualise and address issues of gender, militarism, peace and security. A focus on education and participation at the international level leads to concrete organising and acivism around the world, givis us gloal and local ownership over the issues upon which we work. WILPF can also be seen as a social mocement, with an ongoing iam of continuity between issues, locations and time periods.
