What is a copy of your passport?

A copy of your passport is exactly what you think it is.
This is a copy of the page in your passport with your photo and often also the back of this page.
A copy of your passport is one of those small things that can prevent a huge amount of hassle. You use it more often than you think and you only miss it when it's too late.

A copy of your passport is useful to check in at hostels and hotels (your passport often has to be left at the reception; your copy can sometimes suffice).
A copy of your passport is often needed when applying for a local SIM card or public transport card.
A copy of your passport is handy during identity checks on the streets (when you don't want to have your original passport with you).
When renting a scooter, surfboard or alpaca (yes, really), a copy of your passport often needs to be submitted.
A copy of your passport you can use a backup in case of loss or theft of your original passport. To have a copy of your passport makes replacing a passport much easier at an embassy or consulate.

Always bring a copy of your passport. You never know what will happen and it is better to have a backup!
Hide your printed copy well and make sure you also have an (encrypted) digital version somewhere.
Try to avoid handing over your real passport in a situation where you no longer have visibility or control over it.

In almost every country you can make copies: at copy shops, hotels, guesthouses or internet cafes (yes, they still exist).
Note: never just make a copy of your passport on a public computer without deleting it afterwards. It is very easy for malicious persons to have a copier store a digital copy and thus enable identity fraud
