Dierenhulp

De Dierenbescherming biedt actief hulp aan dieren die in directe nood zijn. Zo werkt de Dierenbescherming samen met asielen, heeft de organisatie zelf dierenopvangcentra en is de organisatie verbonden met veel dierenambulances.

De Dierenambulance is misschien wel het meest bekende voorbeeld van dierenhulp. Dierenambulances brengen zieke, gewonde en zwervende dieren naar een dierenarts of opvangcentrum. Het personeel kan ook dieren-EHBO geven. De dierenambulances zijn niet van de Dierenbescherming zelf, maar zijn vaak verbonden met de organisatie. De plaatselijke afdeling steekt dan geld in de ambulance, levert vrijwilligers en betaalde krachten.

Toezicht dierenwelzijn

Dierenwelzijn is sterk verbonden met dierenhulp. Toezicht op dierenwelzijn is minder actief maar meer preventief, het moet dierenleed voorkomen. De Dierenbescherming doet dit door samen te werken met andere organisaties maar ook door mensen voor te lichten. Voor toezicht op dierenwelzijn heeft de Dierenbescherming een speciale unit; de Landelijke Inspectiedienst Dierenbescherming (LID). De LID houdt toezicht op dierenwelzijn en reageert voornamelijk op meldingen van mensen zelf. Het LID kan dus reageren op een melding van mishandeling maar voert ook routine controles uit bij dierentransport of in opvangcentra.

Voorlichting

Met voorlichting wil de Dierenbescherming kennis vergroten, bewustwording creëren en gedragsverandering plaats laten vinden bij volwassenen en kinderen. De organisatie doet dit door grote acties te lanceren, campagne te voeren en voorlichting te geven op scholen. Voor kinderen is er een speciale jeugdclub opgericht; Kids for Animals.

Een bekende manier van voorlichting van de Dierenbescherming is het sterrensysteem op vlees. In grote supermarkten staat bij veel vleesproducten hoe diervriendelijk het product is. Producten met drie sterren zijn beter voor het dierenwelzijn dan producten met één ster. Met dit systeem wil de organisatie consumenten een hulpmiddel bieden om de diervriendelijkheid van dierlijke producten te beoordelen.

Beleidsbeïnvloeding

Beleidsbeïnvloeding richt zich op het verbeteren van beleid en wetgeving in de politiek, maar ook bij bedrijven, wetenschap en andere organisaties. Hiervoor voert de Dierenbescherming voortdurend overleg, treedt ze op als adviseur en organiseert ze protestacties. Beleidsbeïnvloeding gebeurt op nationaal niveau, maar ook op Europees niveau in samenwerking met andere Europese dierenorganisaties.
