- Inter-group phenomena: stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination, cultural differences, diversity, organizational merges.
- Power, leadership: power bases and tactics, need for leadership, men vs women as leaders;
- Task performance: mixed-motives, free riders, and suckers, cooperation/competition in groups, volunteer work;
- Decision making: individual vs group decision making, economic decision making, the perception of risks;
- Environment: pro-environment behavior, energy-saving behavior.
Voorbeelden van toegepast onderzoek in het veld
Nested groepen: subgroep categorisatie: een individu binnen een groep binnen een grotere groep/ personal categorisatie/ collectieve categorisatie (zie HC 1).
De theorie over subgroepen: als je teams hebt en locaties in verschillende landen --> wij vs zij. Je vertrouwt je eigen ingroup en vertrouwt je outgroup niet. Mensen voelen zich aangetrokken tot hun eigen subgroep.
Voorbeeld van het onderzoek: de medewerkers moesten classificeren wie van de groepen bij 'wij' en wie er bij 'zij' horen. Daarna moesten ze een rating maken van de intenties
Uitkomst: in alle gevallen de 'wij' groepen waren positiever beoordeeld. --> schadelijk voor het bedrijf want competitie binnen medewerkers die moeten samenwerken, is niet wenselijk. Wij vs. zij: faultlines tussen de teams.
Aanbevelingen (cf theorie)
Condities voor fruitful inter-groepscontact: verminder a-priori status verschillen tussen de teams/ interpersoonlijke coöperatie om gewone doelen te behalen (zorg dat ze samenwerken)/ deel de gedeelde normen die coöperatie promoten/ de team directors zouden de anderen moeten leiden d.m.v. het juiste voorbeeld. De 'extended' contact hypothese: hoe meer groepsleden goede relaties hebben met leden van de andere groepen, hoe minder diep de faultlines tussen de groepen is.
Shared membership (warm/cold side): wat als je een iemand in het midden hebt die met zijn eigen team moet omgaan en ook connecties heeft met de andere groep --> kan een belangrijke link zijn tussen de groepen.
Aanbevelingen voor het bedrijf:
- Creëer gemixte teams/roteer je teams/ voorkom status verschillen
- Promote coöperatie richting collectieve doelen (dwingen tot samenwerken/doelen behalen)
- Promote een open uitwisseling voor het bieden en vragen van hulp (shared resources/ tit-for-tat)
- Team directors zouden moeten laten zien hoe het moet door naar het andere land/locatie te gaan
N.B. Unit of statistical analysis
Groepsprocessen in teams: de variabiliteit in de responses van de vragenlijsten is vaak lager in teams dan de variabiliteit in de responsen van alle participanten. De response van alle participanten across alle drie teams is niet zo informatief. Beter om een multi-level analysis uit te voeren (!!)
Voorbeeld van experimenteel onderzoek in een lab
Experimenteel onderzoek naar de predicatieve positieve effecten van mixed groepscompositie over coöperatie richting een collectief doel, in vergelijking tot een homogene groep compositie.
- Mixed motives: kiezen tussen common of persoonlijke belangen;
- Groepscompositie: common interest: wie zijn de leden van de andere groepen waar ik bij hoor?
- Within-participants design: participant is een lid van twee tien-persoons groepen.

Conclusie experiment 1: homogene groepen: er is meer coöperatie richting de groep met alleen maar ingroup leden dan richting de groep met alleen maar outgroup leden. Deze 'parochial coöperatie' komt meer voor onder pro-socials, dan onder pro-selves.
Conclusie experiment 2: meer coöperatie richting een groep met een meerderheid van ingroup leden, dan richting een groep met een meerderheid van outgroup leden.
Algemene conclusie: meer coöperatie richting een groep met een meerderheid van outgroup leden (EXP 2), dan richting een groep met alleen maar outgroup leden (EXP 1).
Onderzoeksethiek
Psychologie faculteiten van universiteiten over de hele wereld moeten een Insitutional Review Board (IRB) hebben. In Nederland hebben we de Ethics Committee. Als je je scriptie gaat schrijven, dan moet het langs deze commissie. Alle research proposals worden reviewd!
Wat doet deze commissie:
- Een senior onderzoeker moet de uiteindelijke verantwoordelijkheid hebben;
- Zijn er risico's voor participanten (gezondheid, verliezen van geld, naalden schoon);
- Zijn de psychologische metingen veilig;
- Pay-offs voor de participanten (credits, Ecs, Euro's);
- Informed consent;
- Deception, debriefing, omgaan met klachten (wie?), nazorg;
- Unobtrusive' measurements (mag je een camera gebruiken/filmen);
- Wetenschappelijke integriteit:
- Conflicting intrests;
- Analyse en opslaan van onderzoeksdata;
- Het rapporteren van de resultaten (completeness).

There are several ways to navigate the large amount of summaries, study notes en practice exams on JoHo WorldSupporter.
- Starting Pages: for some fields of study and some university curricula editors have created (start) magazines where customised selections of summaries are put together to smoothen navigation. When you have found a magazine of your likings, add that page to your favorites so you can easily go to that starting point directly from your profile during future visits. Below you will find some start magazines per field of study
- Use the menu above every page to go to one of the main starting pages
- Tags & Taxonomy: gives you insight in the amount of summaries that are tagged by authors on specific subjects. This type of navigation can help find summaries that you could have missed when just using the search tools. Tags are organised per field of study and per study institution. Note: not all content is tagged thoroughly, so when this approach doesn't give the results you were looking for, please check the search tool as back up
- Follow authors or (study) organizations: by following individual users, authors and your study organizations you are likely to discover more relevant study materials.
- Search tool : 'quick & dirty'- not very elegant but the fastest way to find a specific summary of a book or study assistance with a specific course or subject. The search tool is also available at the bottom of most pages
