Travel hat: what is it, and should you take it with you on a trip or while backpacking?

What is a travel hat?

  • A travel hat is a hat intended to protect your head and face from sun, heat, rain, or insects while traveling.
  • Particularly in the tropics, in the desert, and at destinations with strong sunlight, a hat can be important to help prevent sunburn and sunstroke.
  • Unlike a regular fashionable hat, a travel hat is usually designed for practicality: lightweight, UV-resistant, easily foldable, and made of material that does not get dirty quickly or is easy to clean.
  • A well-fitting travel hat is less likely to blow off during walks, boat trips, or rides on the back of a scooter. Some models therefore also feature a chin strap or adjustable cord.
  • There are all kinds of hats that are used as travel hats. Think, for example, of:
    • Panama hats.
    • Fedoras.
    • Booney hats.
    • Cowboy hats.
    • Fisherman hats.
    • Safari hats.
  • In addition, there are also special travel hats with extra features such as mosquito netting, neck protection against the sun, ventilation holes, and rain-resistant material.
  • Not every hat is equally practical for travel. Large straw hats or stiff models sometimes look nice, but they get damaged more easily on the road or are difficult to pack.

What can you use a travel hat for when traveling and backpacking?

  • A travel hat is, of course, primarily used as protection against the sun. During long walks, hikes, safaris, boat trips, or city walks, a hat can help keep your head cooler and reduce the direct exposure of your face, ears, and neck to UV radiation.
  • Additionally, a hat often offers practical protection against light rain, dust, sand, and insects. This can be particularly pleasant in tropical areas or when traveling at high altitudes.

When should you take a hat with you when traveling or backpacking?

  • When traveling to sunny areas, a hat is actually always handy to bring along. Especially in the tropics, desert regions, and at high altitudes, the sun can be very strong, even when it doesn't feel extremely hot.
  • A travel hat is also often practical during longer trips, treks, or backpacking trips, because you spend a lot of time outdoors along the way.
  • For city trips, some travelers do not bring a hat from home, but purchase one locally en route that immediately serves as a useful souvenir.

Where can you buy a travel hat locally when you are traveling?

  • Travel hats are available in many places worldwide. You can find them, among others:
    • at markets.
    • in outdoor stores.
    • in souvenir shops.
    • at beach destinations.
  • Many travelers still buy a hat locally while traveling, for example, because the climate calls for it or because a local hat is better suited to the conditions.
