  • Saturnia Waterfalls: Also called the healthiest waterfalls in Italy. Healing sulfurous water of 37 degrees Celsius you get for free and for nothing in the southernmost tip of Tuscany. Because of the crowds, they are polluting, but if you look for a moment, you will find much cleaner and warmer water a little further on.
  • Lake Garda: Italy's largest lake - with a circumference of about 160 kilometers - is hugely popular with tourists. The deep blue water, oleanders, lemon trees and cypresses give Lake Garda its typical Italian character. Especially in the north of Italy near the lakes, it can be incredibly crowded in the summer (also with mosquitoes, by the way).
  • Italians can be quite hussle and fussmakers and this is reflected in traffic, among other things. Honking and tearing around is the most normal thing in the world, but for foreigners this can be quite impressive.

What to take with you to Italy: spotlighted

  • Documents: ID card or passport and European health insurance card. Copies never hurt.
  • Money: some change and a debit card. Credit card is useful for car rental.
  • Care: sunscreen or sunscreen with a high factor (and possibly quite water-resistant) – because Italian sun + marble piazzas = melted tourist.

  • Study insurance is specifically designed for studying abroad, whereas regular travel insurance policies may offer coverage on paper but handle this situation differently in practice.
  • Study insurance offers coverage for longer stays than regular (vacation) travel insurance.

What to take with you to Italy: spotlighted

  • Documents: ID card or passport and European health insurance card. Copies never hurt.
  • Money: some change and a debit card. Credit card is useful for car rental.
  • Care: sunscreen or sunscreen with a high factor (and possibly quite water-resistant) – because Italian sun + marble piazzas = melted tourist.
  • Outdoor and practical: for summer and spring - cap or hat for the burning sun, and good sunglasses. Umbrella or raincoat.
  • Clothing: very much depends on when you go and what you are going to do. Generally light clothing in summer with something warm for the evening, layers in spring and autumn and warmer clothing for the winter (especially in the north and the mountains). A stylish outfit for the evening!
  • Shoes: sandals or slippers for the warm months and comfortable (walking) shoes.
  • Medicines and travel kit: a small first aid kit with plasters. Technology and equipment: plug type C/F just like in the Netherlands (see also world plug or travel plug).
  • Woman: scarf or light shawl for in churches.
What are some other options for packing as well?
  • Reusable water bottle.
  • Quick-drying travel towel if you go hiking.
  • Driving license, if you want to rent a car.
  • A picnic blanket and a corkscrew of course!

  • Mosquitoes are mainly present and very annoying from about May to September.
  • They are mainly found around water, including the beautiful lakes.
  • In general, it is not necessary to use anti-mosquito repellent, wearing covering clothing helps a lot where necessary.

Are there sandflies in Italy?

  • During the summer months, your visit to the beautiful countryside of Italy may be disrupted by the pappataci.
  • These sandflies are particularly irritating, as their bite causes itching and irritation. They are not really dangerous.
  • Mosquito repellent can be a solution when visiting warm, rural areas with lots of greenery and water.

Can you buy a joint or weed in Italy, or take it with you to Italy?

  • Cannabis is not legal for recreational use, but it is legal for medical use.
  • But don't worry, it has been decriminalized: small amounts for personal use usually do not result in a criminal record, but can still lead to a fine or confiscation - especially when you have more than 1.5 grams in your pocket.
  • In any case, don't smoke in public, then you'll quickly be chilled out.
  • Taking joint or weed with you is illegal anyway and there are high penalties.

You can get involved in nature, in a project with animals or cleaning the sea or beaches. Those who want to learn more can choose for example a language course in Latin America, Spain or South Africa.

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
