Travel in French Guiana?
- French Guiana is a little-visited part of France that is surrounded by Brazil and on the east side by Suriname. It has tropical rainforests, there are beautiful islands off the coast, you can eat refined food, it is sparsely populated, and you will encounter special ethnic groups.
- Cayenne: the capital, with Fort Cépérou, which was built by the French. The city is lively and is a mix of colonial atmosphere and with many colors. 90% of the population lives in the coastal region of Cayenne.
- Visit the ruins of Devil's Island, the former penal colony of the French.
- Go to the island la Mère: a natural island with monkeys, where you can go for a nice walk.
- Kourou where the launch base: Centre Spatial Guyanais is. The place where you can experience a rocket launch. It is important to plan this visit well, booking a few days in advance is mandatory.
- French Guiana generally has poor infrastructure and facilities.
- Be aware that traveling is time-consuming and not a cheap affair.
