Hermeneutiek wordt ook wel de studie van het proces van interpreteren genoemd, inclusief het achterhalen en expliciet maken van de achtergrond of context die een tekst of kunstwerk begrijpelijker maakt.

Schleiermacher en Dilthey. Schleiermacher staat bekend als de eerste die een aanzet tot een algemene interpretatieleer gaf. Schleiermachers hermeneutiek wordt systematisch uitgewerkt door Wilhelm Dilthey, die als de eerste grote methodoloog van de geesteswetenschappen kan worden beschouwd. Volgens Dilthey is de hermeneutische methode dat wat de geesteswetenschappen principieel onderscheidt van de natuurwetenschappen, die een empirische of observationele methode volgen

Gadamers uitgangspunt is dat taal niet simpelweg een culturele verworvenheid is, maar de mens maakt tot wat hij is. Taal is niet slechts een instrument om gedachten uit te drukken , maar heeft vooral een scheppende of wereldontsluitende functie.
