What should you do if your credit card, debit card or payment methods are stolen or lost abroad while traveling?

  • If you have an arrangement where an organization (such as a bank or insurance company) handles everything for you and can block your cards, follow the procedure of that arrangement.
  • So, check the terms and conditions carefully and block your cards as soon as possible in case of theft or loss.

What should you do if your credit card is stolen or lost abroad while traveling?

  • If your credit card is stolen or lost, you must report this to your bank and/or credit card company as soon as possible. Block your card by phone, through the mobile banking app, or online banking.
  • If your credit card has become unusable, contact your bank and/or credit card company, but keep in mind that, depending on your location, a new card may not be sent to you quickly. So never rely solely on your debit or credit cards.

What should you do if your debit or bank card is stolen or lost abroad while traveling?

  • If your debit card is stolen or lost, you must report it to your bank as soon as possible, either by phone, through your mobile banking app, or online banking. Never rely solely on your debit or credit cards, and always keep a secret stash of cash somewhere that will last you a few days.
  • It's possible your debit card could be stolen by an ATM. In that case, try going to the nearest bank branch where the ATM is located. You can often get your card back this way. Be sure to bring your passport or other ID.
  • If your new debit card was sent to your home address, have your family use it at a Dutch ATM first. Otherwise, it might not work abroad.
  • Note: Sometimes a card needs to be configured separately to work in specific countries. By default, only Europe is enabled, so that for security reasons, the card cannot be used to withdraw money outside Europe. So, if you're outside Europe, you need to change these settings for your card online so it can be used outside Europe.

What should you do if your prepaid credit card or Money Card is stolen or lost while traveling?

  • Various organizations (such as VISA and MasterCard) offer the option of purchasing a so-called Money Card. You can load this card with a certain amount and then use it like a debit card until the credit runs out. The card is reloadable.
  • A prepaid credit card is a relatively secure system because you withdraw your money with a PIN, and a thief (even if your PIN is known) can't empty your entire account.
  • If your prepaid credit card is stolen, you can block it in the same way as a regular credit or debit card.
