Aids Fonds

Zowel in Nederland als in het buitenland is het Aids Fonds betrokken bij de behandeling, zorg en ondersteuning van mensen met hiv. De organisatie financiert wetenschappelijk onderzoek, verzorgt preventie en ondersteunt mensen met hiv in Nederland en in ontwikkelingslanden. Dit doet ze door campagne te voeren, fondsen te werven en projecten te financieren.

Aidsbestrijding in ontwikkelingslanden:

Meer dan 90% van de mensen met hiv leeft in ontwikkelingslanden. Het Aids Fonds werkt, samen met andere organisaties, aan projecten in deze landen met als doel om mensen met hiv te ondersteunen en voorlichting te geven.

Zo is het Aids Fonds bijvoorbeeld actief in Oost-Europa met het ‘medicatie voor iedereen: ook in Oost-Europa’ project. In veel Oost-Europese landen is er regelmatig een tekort aan hiv-medicatie. Hierdoor krijgt lang niet iedereen de medicatie die nodig is. Het Aids Fonds werkt samen met andere organisaties in Oost-Europa om betere toegang tot medicatie mogelijk te maken. Dit doen ze door de regering onder druk te zetten, de publiciteit te zoeken en patentvrije, goedkope medicatie op de markt te brengen.

Wetenschappelijk aidsonderzoek:

Het Aids Fonds financiert wetenschappelijk onderzoek op het gebied van preventie, behandeling en genezing van hiv/aids. Zo draagt het Aids Fonds bij aan onderzoek naar de ontwikkeling van hiv-remmers, maar ook naar een betaalbare behandeling voor zwangere vrouwen in ontwikkelingslanden bijvoorbeeld.

Aidsbestrijding in Nederland:

Ook in Nederland worden mensen geïnfecteerd met hiv. Met publiekscampagnes en voorlichting werkt het Aids Fonds op nationaal niveau aan de bestrijding van hiv/aids.

Sinds 2009 bijvoorbeeld stelt het Aids Fonds gratis condooms en glijmiddel beschikbaar op alle Nederlandse homo uitgaansgelegenheden. Hiv komt in deze gemeenschap relatief veel voor en het condoom is het beste middel om hiv te voorkomen.

Ondersteuning van mensen met hiv:

Mensen met hiv hebben vaak te maken met stigma en discriminatie. Het Aids Fonds behartigt belangen van mensen met hiv en komt op voor gelijke rechten in Nederland en daarbuiten. Zo ondersteunt het Aids Fonds de Hiv vereniging in Nederland, organiseert ze campagnes en verleent ze individuele hulpverlening door financiële hulp te bieden aan hiv-patiënten met een laag inkomen.

Een bekende campagne van het Aids Fonds is de ‘Hoe positief ben jij?’ campagne. De campagne richt zich op bewustwording met de vraag ‘Wat zou je doen als ik?’. Bekende Nederlanders stelden vragen als “Zou je me nog zoenen als ik hiv-positief zou zijn”. Het doel was om de houding ten aanzien van mensen met hiv op een positieve manier te beïnvloeden.
