Tigers abroad and while traveling: are they dangerous, where do you encounter them, where can you see them?

What are tigers?

  • Tigers are large cats, closely related to animals such as lions and leopards.
  • Tigers live in Asia, specifically in India, Russia, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Indonesia.
  • In these countries, these "kings of the jungle" are primarily found in forested areas that offer an abundance of water and large prey animals.

Where is the best place to see tigers in the wild?

  • India: Approximately three-quarters of the world's tiger population lives in India—for example, within the "tiger reserves" and national parks, such as Bandipur National Park in southern India. While tiger-spotting tours cannot guarantee a sighting, areas that support tiger populations are often home to many other remarkable animals as well.
  • Bangladesh: In the mangrove forests of the Sundarbans, in particular, there is a chance you might spot a tiger while traveling by boat.

Are tigers dangerous to humans?

  • In general, tigers are shy animals that prefer to leave humans alone.
  • A tiger attack is more likely if you are crawling on the ground or walking in a stooped position—for instance, while performing agricultural work, as the tiger may mistake you for other large game.
  • However, some tigers may actively hunt humans due to hunger or injury.
  • In regions where human activity increasingly encroaches upon tiger habitats, attacks occur more frequently than they do in protected natural areas.

What should you do if you encounter a tiger in the wild?

  • Stay calm and do not run; running away triggers a predator's instincts, and you certainly won't win a race against a tiger (unless the person next to you happens to be slower...).
  • Make yourself look large, show that you are aware of the tiger (but avoid a staring contest), seek out other people, and make some noise.
