What are the working conditions for au pairs in the Netherlands?
- On average, you will work 20 to 30 hours per week, including childcare and light household tasks. You may babysit a maximum of three evenings per week.
- The minimum requirement is that you have one day off per week and one full weekend off per month. This means that you may have to work a few hours a day, six days a week, and then do whatever you want.
- You will work as an au pair for a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 12 months.
- For every six months you work, you are entitled to 14 paid vacation days. Preference is given to days when the host family is also on vacation.
- It is important that you make all agreements regarding working hours and free time before you start as an au pair and that these are recorded on paper to avoid any problems.
- Since you will be living with the family as an au pair, you will need to be somewhat flexible with your working hours, as family life cannot always be planned down to the minute. If you end up working for a nice family, you may find yourself spending extra time with the children without it feeling like work. Be aware of your rights, maintain your personal boundaries, but be open to real family life.
What is the salary for an au pair in the Netherlands?
- As an au pair, you stay in your own, lockable room in the host family's home in exchange for board and lodging, including all meals of the day
- The au pair can often use the host family's transportation: bike, family cargo bike or car.
- In addition, the guideline is that you will receive a certain amount of pocket money each week. In the Netherlands, an au pair receives between 300 and 340 euro per month.
