A simple checklist for finding work on a Working Holiday Visa

What should you arrange before (or right after) your arrival?

  • TFN (Tax File Number) sorted
  • Australian bank account opened
  • Local SIM card (so people can actually call you)
  • A simple Australian-style résumé (1–2 pages is plenty)
  • Clear idea of your visa length and work limitations

How do you get noticed and visible?

  • Join local Facebook job groups (hospitality, farm work, backpackers, town-specific groups)
  • Join WhatsApp or Messenger groups through hostels or shared houses
  • Tell people you meet that you’re looking for work (more than once)

What is important when you are applying?

  • The most important thing is to be ready to respond
  • Notifications on for job groups
  • A short message ready to copy-paste (“Hi! I’m available immediately, have experience in…, can start today.”)
  • Flexible availability in the beginning if possible

What kind of tickets are useful (when relevant)?

  • RSA if you want hospitality work
  • White Card if you’re looking at construction or laboring
  • First Aid if it makes sense for your sector
  • Don’t rush into courses unless an employer asks for them

How to do in-person job hunting?

  • Walk into cafés, bakeries, hostels, lodges, and small businesses you actually like
  • Bring printed résumés (even just a few)
  • Ask politely if they’re hiring or know someone who is

What are the mindset checks you can do?

  • Not having a job yet ≠ failing
  • Short-term work still counts
  • Everyone’s timeline is different
  • Luck plays a bigger role than we like to admit

What can you do when finding a job is taking longer than expected?

  • Broaden the type of work you are open to
  • Change locations if possible (regional areas can be very different)
  • Ask people directly if they know of anything coming up
  • Take care of your mental health while waiting
