What are the main differences between a Level 3 and a Level 5 TEFL course?

What do ‘level 3’ and ‘level 5’ mean in a TEFL course?

  • The level 5 course (as well as the cerTESOL or CELTA courses) are equivalent to a Foundation Degree within the English education system (Regulated Qualifications Framework). In most countries, this would be equivalent to the second year of a bachelor's degree.
  • Level 3 in the English education system is comparable to the Dutch vwo final exam or the Belgian ASO diploma, or more general: a level that would allow you to start a bachelors study
  • Non-British providers of TEFL courses usually only differentiate in terms of number of hours and specializations and do not use the terms level 3 and level 5 at all.

What is the difference between the Level 3 and Level 5 TEFL courses?

  • The main difference between the Level 3 and Level 5 TEFL courses is that the Level 5 course consists of more intensive training with more challenging assignments.
  • Both a Level 3 and Level 5 course will allow you to teach worldwide, but with a Level 5 course, you will generally be eligible for better-paid jobs in popular destinations.
  • A Level 3 course is suitable if you plan to teach for a relatively short period (1 to 2 years) or volunteer. If you are pursuing a teaching career, a Level 5 course will be more appropriate.
