Intro: Doing a traineeship and intern abroad

What are reasons to choose an international internship?

  • You gain new experiences. For example, for the first time you are without your family or friends in another country for several months. You are going to live for a longer period of time in a different place, in a different culture. You can suddenly do new things, from diving on coral reefs, to multi-day jungle trips or living in a city with millions of people!
  • You experience what it is like to be in a completely new environment. You learn what it is like to live somewhere else, find your way in a new city, observe how you arrange transport, do the shopping and communicate with each other. You notice that life is different because the climate is different. You also learn a lot about how you respond to these types of changes. Are you adapting as easily as you expected? Or do some things prove to be difficult to get used to?
  • Your degree of independence grows enormously. You are completely on your own two feet. You will often cook for yourself in your own apartment. And you meet new people everywhere, where you live, your internship, etc.
  •  In many cases you will also learn a new language or, for example, improve your English.
  • For some studies, an international internship is a 'must'. International business or tourism students often go on an internship abroad at least once, but sometimes you can also do your graduation internship abroad.
  • Working interculturally. You will find that working is very different from traveling in another country! The work culture can be very different - from very practical (working hours) and communication (direct or very indirect) to more cultural aspects (for example the relevance of hierarchy in the organization).
  • An international internship often helps to distinguish yourself from others. As all the points above indicate, you have not only gained many additional experiences in independence, intercultural communication and collaboration, but you have often also built up a lot of self-knowledge.
