Effectgrootte
Veel statistische analyses eindigen met bepalen of het verschil significant is, ook al weten we nog niets over hoe groot het verschil is en is de conclusie nog sterk afhankelijk van de steekproefgrootte. Om dit soort problemen op te lossen zijn er maten om de effectgrootte te meten.
Cohen’s d is een maat die niet afhankelijk is van de steekproefgrootte en niet van de meetschaal. Cohen’s d bereken je door het verschil van de twee populatiegemiddelden te delen door de standaarddeviatie:
d = |μ1 – μ2| / σ
Als de populatiegemiddelden onbekend zijn, kun je gebruik maken van de steekproefgemiddelden x1 en x2. Als de standaarddeviatie onbekend is, zijn er meerdere opties mogelijk. Bij onafhankelijke steekproeven (bijvoorbeeld een experimentele groep en een controle groep) kun je de standaarddeviatie vervangen door sp.
Voor afhankelijke steekproeven (bijvoorbeeld matched pairs) wordt sp niet gebruikt. In plaats daarvan wordt sd gebruikt. sd is de standaarddeviatie van het verschil in een paired sample t-test en r is de correlatie tussen de steekproefgemiddelden.
Cohen’s d is een manier om het gedeelte te meten dat niet overlapt wanneer je de verdelingen over elkaar heen zou leggen. Hoe groter de waarde, hoe minder overlap er is. Een waarde die tussen 0.2 en 0.5 ligt, is een klein effect, tussen 0.5 en 0.8 is het een medium effect en 0.8 of groter wordt een groot effect genoemd. Als een waarde kleiner is dan 0.2 wordt hij als niet relevant beschouwd, ook al is hij significant bevonden. Het is afhankelijk van de onderzoeksvraag of je een klein, medium of groot effect wilt vinden.
