Article summary of It’s different for girls’: Gender differences in the friendships and conflict of autistic and neurotypical adolescents by Sedgewick - Chapter

What are the differences in adolescent friendships between autistic males and females?

There are some qualitative differences between cognitively-able autistic boys and girls:

  • They show a similar amount of overall socialising, but autistic boys tend to play with friends, whereas autistic girls mostly talk with their friends.
  • Particularly autistic girls and women develop compensatory strategies to camouflage their social difficulties.
  • Autistic girls rate their best-friendships as more like those of non-autistic girls than autistic and non-autistic boys.

What important questions are raised by these differences?

Firstly, apparent qualitative differences in the social relationships of autistic boys and girls may be a reason why girls tend to be clinically identified later than boys, or why sometimes they do not receive a diagnosis at all. Secondly, gender may be more central in determining social experiences than diagnostic status. The friendship experiences of autistic girls appear to be more similar to those of non-autistic girls than autistic boys.
