Intro

Backpacking in Ireland?

  • Green hills full of sheep, pubs full of music and breathtaking scenery, while backpacking in Ireland you really imagine yourself in the ancient Celtic culture. But beware, it's pretty pricey especially in the summer months!
  • Features: high cost, coziness, greenery, rain, music, ruins and of course Guinness!

Traveling in Ireland?

  • A trip through Ireland offers a mix of impressive natural beauty and rich culture, with scenic routes like the Wild Atlantic Way and charming towns like Galway and Cork. The hospitable locals and many historical sites make it a captivating destination for adventurous travelers.
  • City spotting: Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Kilkenny, Waterford.
  • Activities spotting: get into nature and climb, hike, bike, visit historic castles, enjoy traditional music in the pub, do a whiskey or beer tasting, play a game of golf and discover the unique culture and atmosphere of the cities.
  • Nature spotting: the famous Cliffs of Moher, Killarney park, Connemera, Wicklow Mountains, Donegal, The Burren, Ring of Kerry.
  • Animal spotting: Irish squid, otters, deer, eagles, seal.

Studying in Ireland?

  • Education in Ireland: Ireland has a high level of education with a strong focus on research and innovation and some of the best institutions in Europe.
  • Language: English! But if you really want to, you can also find courses in Irish.
  • Studies: an awful lot of choices at undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Study cities: Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick.
  • Study culture: open and collegial, with much emphasis on critical thinking. Student participation through clubs and societies and student cafes is also a thing. If you want to join the Gaelic football club then you can make friends there, or maybe you'd rather talk politics? Then you can do that too!
  • Language learning: English is the main language of instruction, but students can also learn Irish through language courses and programs offered by universities and language schools, especially in the Gaeltacht regions.

Internships in Ireland?

  • Internships: you can find internships in all kinds of sectors.
  • Internship cities: Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford.
  • Characteristics: Ireland is still part of the EU, so in terms of visa it is not difficult. A lot of opportunities and everything is in English. Nice and easy.
  • Skills: improve your English in a professional environment, understanding of EU regulations, experience with start-ups.

Volunteering in Ireland?

  • Affairs are generally well regulated in Ireland, so volunteering can be found especially in sectors where extra help is needed such as supporting the elderly, the less fortunate, children, and working on (eco) farms.
  • Animal/nature projects: sustainable agriculture, stray animal shelters,
  • Characteristics: not an awful lot of options, but they are certainly there from a few weeks to a few months. In most cases you do pay for your living expenses yourself, unless you find volunteer work through individuals.

Working in Ireland?

  • Jobs: you can do all sorts of side jobs in Ireland if you speak English, as well as permanent work. Work is particularly plentiful in tech, pharmaceuticals, financial services, customer service, hospitality and healthcare.
  • Work culture: the work culture is relatively informal and friendly, and there is a lot of focus on flexibility and a good work-life balance. Collaboration is super important, so the Irish tend to be good at communication and sharing ideas, social activities are important and there is often room for input from all levels.
  • Features: English makes life in Ireland a lot easier, also there are many different jobs available for foreigners. And if you're from the EU, you don't need a work visa!

Working as a digital nomad in Ireland?

  • In itself an attractive country for digital nomads (provided you can handle the weather), but there is not a large digital nomad community.
  • Characteristics: cozy, beautiful country, friendly people, good facilities, tech and startup scene, safe, but expensive and lots of “bad” weather.

Living in Ireland?

  • If you really want to immerse yourself in Celtic culture, move to Ireland! The land of green rolling landscapes, musical pubs and beer and whiskey. Enjoy life and rain!
  • Language: The official language in Ireland is English, which makes it easy for English-speaking foreigners to communicate and integrate.
  • Quality of life: Ireland has a high quality of life with a strong economy, good education, excellent health care, and beautiful natural landscapes.
  • Culture: Irish culture is rich in traditions, music, dance and literature, with a strong emphasis on community and hospitality. And this is something the Irish are proud of, too! If you love storytelling and a good dose of humor, you've definitely come to the right place, too.
  • Features: access to beautiful scenery, a mild climate, a relaxed lifestyle, and the opportunity to participate in lively cultural and social activities. You are a bit further away from the rest of Europe, though.
  • Healthcare: Healthcare in Ireland is high quality and accessible, with modern hospitals and well-trained medical professionals. Be sure to arrange your own (international) health insurance, though.

Ireland: Updates & Travel

Travel in Ireland?

  • A hilly island with many lakes, cliffs, bays, fjords, folk music, whiskey, pubs, fishing spots, many hiking, biking and horseback riding trails and the traditional covered wagon ride.
  • Visit the Irish pub or Irish whiskey distillery. Every village has at least one pub and these usually the social heart of a village or town. Try one of the many beers or an Irish whiskey.
  • Explore Ireland on foot. Ireland has a large number of beautiful hiking trails. Walk along the coast or through the mountains and explore the villages you encounter along the way.
  • Visit the “cliffs of Moher”: These cliffs 120 to 200 meters high rise straight up from the sea on the coast of Southwest Ireland. From the top of these cliffs you have a magnificent view. You can also see the Aran Islands if the weather is good.
  • Visit a Gaelic football game or a hurling (looks a bit like field hockey) game. The Irish are absolutely crazy about these national sports.
  • Ireland's capital city, Dublin, is bustling. Visit one of the many museums or relax in Phoenix park, the largest park in a city in Europe. This park is bigger than Central park in New York.
  • Ireland's second city, Cork, is a lot smaller than Dublin, and also a lot less touristy.
  • Newgrange: This is the most famous historical site in Ireland. Inside this hill there is a tomb.
  • Killarney National Park, the place for a nice walk where you are likely to encounter deer and a huge amount of birds. The lakes are also worth seeing.
  • Visit the Arane Islands. Here you will also find the fort of Aengus, located on the high cliffs.
  • Be prepared to learn to drive on the left!
  • Reminder: At the pub, it is customary for everyone to take turns buying a round of drinks. So if your money is running low, it's best to avoid the pub.

From language courses to gap year abroad, from work experience to volunteering abroad, from paid work to internship abroad, from mountaineering to diving and from backpacking to travel around the world

What social activities can you do abroad?

    • Opportunities are found in the areas of helping, learning or studying. You can get involved to volunteer in a social project at a school in Africa, Asia or Latin America. You can get involved in nature, in a project with animals or cleaning the sea or beaches. Those who want to learn more can choose for example a language course in Latin America, Spain or South Africa.

What work related activities can you do abroad?

    • If you want to gain work experience, and/or also earn money, go and work abroad. You can combine backpacking in Australia with temporary work. You can work on campsites in Europe or bush camps in Africa. You can pretty much go all over the world to work in the hospitality industry, hotels and hostels, in the healthcare sector or for example at a diving school.

What sports activities to do abroad?

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
