Your Guide to Cruising the Adriatic

Speaking of luxurious cruises, the Adriatic undoubtedly is one of the most popular areas in the world. If you’ve always wanted to sail in the Adriatic Sea and have the time of your life – it’s about time you made it happen! Here’s your guide to cruising the Adriatic, so keep on reading, check it out, and learn something new today!

First of all, find out what is the best time to sail

Did you know that the Adriatic consists of over 1,300 islands mostly located along the eastern coast of Croatia? That’s right, and Albania, Slovenia, Italy, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina are other countries that have coasts on the Adriatic. When it comes to this mesmerizing area, we must say that the typical cruising season usually starts around Easter. Of course, it peaks mid-July, when hundreds of boats and yachts of all sizes and shapes can be seen along the Adriatic coasts.

The same goes for big and small motorboats with their skiers and ski boats. Needless to say, September and October are the quietest months as far as cruising is concerned. This is because nighttime temperatures begin to drop during fall. They can go as low as 10°C in October, so be sure to plan your cruise during either spring or summer.

Don’t forget to check the weather before sailing

In case you didn’t know, the Adriatic weather can be quite unpredictable. The Adriatic Sea is well known for its periods of thunderstorms, which can be a huge threat to navigation. You must remember that understanding and monitoring the weather forecast is essential – especially if you’re the skipper. Firstly, you must know that the position of cyclones and anti-cyclones over Central and Southern Europe determine the weather conditions on the Adriatic

Cyclones usually move from west to east and they bring warm and moist winds that cause rainy weather. It’s the Jugo wind that is very common in the Adriatic. However, when anti-cyclones start arising to the East, the wind turns northeast and brings cold and dry air. That’s the Bura wind which is quite common here, too. It brings a clear blue sky by dispersing rain clouds. Also, it provides stable and sunny weather until the next cyclone.

Do your research on sailing and charter possibilities

Once you decide to sail the Adriatic, the next step is researching the sailing and charter possibilities. Of course, the simplest way to get on board a yacht is to rent it. If you’ve never been on a boat before, the best way to go is to check out crewed yacht charters. So, apart from renting a yacht, this option includes a professional skipper and a host as well.

With larger yachts, there will be a deckhand to help with the ropes and mooring operations, too. Just make sure to hire a domestic skipper who can take you on different islands for exciting tours and teach you about their history and cultural heritage. On the other hand, if you are an experienced sailor, you can also go for a bareboat charter. This is quite common in Croatia as it has mild summers when it comes to storms.

Learn about the best areas to explore in the Adriatic Sea

Speaking of cruising the Adriatic, we must say that Slovenia and northern Croatia are undoubtedly the most popular destinations among the cruisers. If you want to explore the history of the Adriatic at its finest, you have to visit its castles, palaces, forts, and cathedrals. Needless to say, Dubrovnik is absolutely unavoidable, so don’t skip it and walk along the Old City Walls that date back to the 10th century.

Did you know that the famous TV series Game of Thrones was filmed here? That’s right, so experience King’s Landing first-hand and have the time of your life in Dubrovnik! When it comes to Split, you mustn’t miss Diocletian’s Palace. This is the place where this ancient Roman emperor once escaped for rest and refuge. One thing is certain – you won’t make a mistake whichever area you choose to explore!

As you can see, cruising the Adriatic can be a truly enchanting and unique experience – if you know what you’re doing, of course. So, all you have to do is to stick to our tips and follow the guidelines. Once you do that, you’ll enjoy a fabulous Adriatic cruise, without a shadow of a doubt!
