"Hee Nienke, waarom doe je niet mee?" riep William vanuit het doel naar de kant van het veld. Het was dinsdagmiddag en we zouden voetballen tegen het voetbalteam van de school bij Pelido. Ik schudde van nee, "ik maak de actie foto's wel" riep ik terug. Daar ben ik vast veel beter in dacht ik bij mezelf. Maar van mooie actie foto's is het nooit gekomen. Al voor ik rustig een plek in kon nemen aan de zijkant van het veld om de wedstrijd te gaan bekijken werd ik beladen met kleine zwarte pietjes. Want hoewel ze niet zulke pakjes aan hebben, zijn ze wel zo lenig als zwarte pieten. Ze gaan op elke mogelijke manier als aapjes aan je hangen. Ja, mzungu's met camera's zijn heel interessant.

Na vele foto's met kinderen die knopjes en bewegende beelden facinerend blijken te vinden kwam er een meisje van mijn leeftijd naast me zitten. Ze stelde zich voor en vroeg naar mij. We hadden een lang gesprek met veel vragen. Hoewel het soms moeilijk is ze te verstaan met hun Afrikaans accent. Ik heb haar gevraagd of we haar mochten interviewen voor Worldsupporter en gelukkig stemde ze toe.

Natuurlijk is de eerste vraag die dan bij je opkomt: Wat is je grootste droom? Want arm of rijk, blank of donker, dromen hebben we allemaal. Dus daarmee is het interview begonnen.

Wat is je grootste droom?

" Een wereldreis maken. Het land waar ik het liefst naar toe zou willen gaan is Amerika, Los Angeles. Maar ik weet niet of dat ooit uit gaat komen. Na school wil ik studeren in Kampala, het liefst wil ik journalist worden. Ik vind het leuk om naar school te gaan. Ook de middelbare, hier leer ik over mensen en hun gedrag, dat vind ik interessant."

Hoe zit het met de mensen op school? Heb je een beste vriendin?

" Ik heb niet echt een beste vriendin, vrienden veranderen snel. Ook heb ik geen vriendje. Een vriendje vanaf je 18e vind ik normaal, of misschien iets eerder, maar op onze school wordt je geschorst als je een koppel bent. Ook kun je geschorst worden als je gemeen bent of je mobiel in de les gebruikt.
Ik zit in de klas met 35 mensen. Het is een boardingschool. Dat betekent dat we er slapen. Ik zie mijn ouders eens in de 3 maanden. Als ik dan naar huis ga, of van huis naar school, ga ik achterop bij een man die ijs verkoopt op zijn bodaboda. Een bodaboda is een soort grote motor, mensen vervoeren er van alles mee. Ik woon in Kampala, dat is een aardig eindje hier vandaan, daarom zit ik ook op een boardingschool."

Soms als we door de community rijden, schreeuwen kindern ons na en rennen ze achter onze bus aan. Hoe kijk jij tegen blanken aan?

" Ik zie jullie gewoon als normale mensen, niet als een God, maar gewoon zoals alle anderen hier, als mensen. Kinderen vinden het leuk om mzungu's (blanken) te zien, omdat ze dan aandacht krijgen. Het is natuurlijk ook wel een beetje speciaal om met mzungu's te spelen, je komt ze namelijk niet elke dag tegen."

We hebben gezien dat iedereen hier kort haar heeft en uniformen draagt, is dat verplicht?
" Haar wordt meestal kort geknipt voor de hygiëne, maar soms kan je ook geschorst worden. Ik zou wel graag lang haar willen hebben. Op school zijn uniformen verplicht, meisjes mogen geen broeken dragen. Soms kunnen ouders uniformen niet betalen, de kinderen worden dan elke dag weer naar huis gestuurd tot de ouders het wel kunnen betalen."

Doe je ook aan sport?

"Ja, ik doe aan korfbal, net als de meeste meisjes hier. Korfbal is een sport voor meisjes en de jongens doen aan voetbal. Er is geen vrouwenteam bij voetbal, maar dat vind niemand erg, zelf hou ik ook niet van voetbal. Er zijn meer dingen die vrouwen niet doen, ze rijden bijvoorbeeld niet op een bodaboda of in een taxi. Een vrouw op een motor, dat vind ik ook maar niets."

We zien hier ook wel eens meisjes met hoofddoeken lopen, hoe zit het hier met geloof?

" De meeste mensen in Oeganda zijn christelijk. Zelf ben ik protestants. Geloof is hier geen probleem, scholen zijn hier gewoon gemengd. Een meisje in mijn klas is Moslim en het verschil is wel te merken. Ze wil wel een heel elftal aan kinderen! Ik vind 3 wel genoeg. "

Zijn er naast school en korfbal nog dingen die je leuk vind om te doen?

" Ja, ik hou van lezen en slapen! Ook hou ik van internationale muziek als Justin Bieber en Beyonce. Ik ken eigenlijk geen Nederlandse muziek of muzikanten. "

Een boeiend gesprek was het zeker. Mijn indruk van haar is dat het een heel slim meisje is die weet wat ze wil en vast veel gaat bereiken. Het is zeker leuk om te praten met iemand van je eigen leeftijd, maar met een heel ander soort leven. Hoewel er veel verschillen zijn in cultuur, merk je ook dat er veel dingen wel hetzelfde zijn. Ik vond het leuk om deze opdracht voor worldsupporter te doen. Zo kom je toch meer te weten dan alleen wat je ziet en merk je gelijk weer dat, hoewel ze er allemaal hetzelfde uitzien en het soms moeilijk is om uit elkaar te halen, ze toch echt niet allemaal hetzelfde zijn. Maar ook dat hoewel ze hier 'arm' zijn, ze gewoon plezier hebben met vrienden, sport en andere hobby's en net als ons grote dromen hebben.

De middag hebben we leuk afgesloten! Met z'n allen in een kring, zingend en spelend op een ukulele. Een hele gezellige en informatieve middag.

Ohh, ons voetbalteam heeft uiteindelijk gelijk gespeeld met 1-1 heb ik later horen zeggen. ;)

"Hee Nienke, why don’t you join us? asked William from the goal to the side of the field. It was Tuesday afternoon and our group would play soccer against the soccer team of the school at Pelido. I shook my head, “I will make the action pictures” I told him. I’m probably a lot better in that, I thought by myself. But it never came to beautiful action pictures. Before I could even look for a peaceful place to sit to watch the game, there came a lot of children to me to sit next or even on me. They are like little monkey’s. They hang or climb on you in every possible way. Yes, mzungu’s with cameras are very interesting.

After making a lot of picture with children who seem to be fascinating by buttons and moving imagines, there came a girl to me of my age. She told me her name and asked mine. We had a long conversation with a lot of questions. However sometimes it’s difficult to understand with there African accent. I asked her if I could interview her for Worldsupporter and fortunately she said yes.

The first question which came to my mind was: What is your biggest dream? Because poor or rich, blank or dark, we all have our dreams. So that’s how the interview started.

What is your biggest dream?

“ To make a worldtrip. The country I would love to go is America, Los Angeles. But I don’t know if it will ever happen. After school I want to study in Kampala, I would like to be a journalist. I like to go to school. Also high school, here I learn about people and their behavior, I think that’s interesting.”

How about the people at school? Do you have a best friend?

“ I don not really have a best friend, friends often change. I also don’t have a boyfriend. A boyfriend is normal when you are 18, or maybe younger I think. But on school you can be suspend when you are a couple. You can also be suspend when you are mean or use a phone in classes.  I’m in class with 35 classmates.  It’s a boardingschool, that means that I also sleep there. I see my parents once per 3 months. When I go home, or from home to school, I go at the back of a bodaboda, a sort motor. The man on the motor sells icecream on his boda. I live in Kampala, that’s far from here, that’s why I’m on boardingsschool.”

Sometimes if we ride in the community, children scream at us and run after our bus. How do you see blank people?

“ I just see you as normal people, not as a God, but just like everybody else here, as people. Children like to see mzungu’s (blank people), because then they get attention. And for sure it is a little special to play with a mzungu, because they don’t meet one every day.

We noticed that everybody here has short hair and wear uniforms, is that required?

“ Most children have short hair because of hygiene, but sometimes you can be suspend for it. I would like to have long hair! On school uniforms are required and girls can’t wear pants. Sometimes parents can’t afford uniforms for their children. The children will be send home by teachers every day,  until the parents pay the money for the uniforms.

Do you like to play sport? 

“ Yes, i play korfball, like the most girls here. Korfball is a sport for girls and the boys play soccer. There is no girl team in soccer, but nobody minds. Me neither, I don’t like soccer that much. There are more things woman can’t do here. For example ride on a bodaboda or in a taxi. A women on a boda, that’s ridiculous

 We see here also girl with headscarves, how does it work with religion?

“ The most people in Uganda are Christian. I am protestant. Religion here is no problem, schools are mixed. A girl from my class is muslim and the difference is noticeable. For example, she would like to have a whole soccer team of children! I think 3 is enough.”

 Are there more things you like to do besides school and korfball?

“ Yes, i like to read and sleep! I also like international music like Justin Bieber and Beyonce. I actually don’t know any Dutch music or artists.”

It was a very interesting conversation. My opinion of her is that she is a very clever girl. She knows what she wants and I think she can achieve a lot of she wants. It’s very nice to talk with someone of your own age, but with a very different life. However there are a lot of difference in culture, you can also notice that there is a lot of things we have in common. I really liked to do this for worldsupporter. By this you come to know a lot more than what you only see. However they all look the same, and sometimes it’s difficult to see who is who, you notice that they are not the same from the inside. And also that however they are ‘poor’ here, they still have fun with friends, sport, music or other things and can have the same big dreams.

We end the day ended the day at a fun way! All together in a circle singing and playing on a ukulele. A very nice and  informative afternoon.

Ohh, and our soccer team played 1-1 against the team of Pelido I heard later. ;)
